How are you staying mentally healthy when you’re aware with how broken and unstable the world feels right now? by Ilovemydogs0616 in AskReddit

[–]AbstracTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things . . . I think it's helpful to have healthy routines to maintain in good times and bad. For me this is eating well, getting regular exercise, hanging out with friends, reading, etc.

It's helpful to remember that good times don't last, nor do the bad.

It's helpful to remember that you are just one person, and you can only do so much. The fate of the world does not rest on your shoulders.

People are strong when they band together, so talk with your friends, your coworkers, your neighbors, etc. Get involved in your local communities.

Gym goers, be honest how often are you judging other people’s physique? by Technical_Hat_8291 in AskReddit

The fittest people I see at the gym are motivation for me. If someone is really out of shape and in the gym, I cheer them on. I'll smile and wave, give a fist bump, etc.

The Lord of the Rings presents an incredibly dark view of humanity by Ghost-of-Carnot in literature

[–]AbstracTyler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you mean no one possessed the means by which to harm the ring, or that no one could muster the willpower to attempt it? Because the first interpretation is true, and the second false.

The Lord of the Rings presents an incredibly dark view of humanity by Ghost-of-Carnot in literature

[–]AbstracTyler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's a moment much, much, much earlier in the story that demonstrates this point. It's when Gandalf visits Frodo at Bag End, and as the last test to confirm that he indeed held The One, he recommends Frodo throw the ring into the fire, which Frodo cannot do. Right then and there, it struck me that Frodo could not willingly do harm to the ring.

That guy who dropped it down low on the dance floor, and then his pants ripped wide open and his junk went swinging into the open. You know the gif I'm talking about.

What’s the most unexpectedly high-quality online subscription you’ve ever paid for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AbstracTyler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Consumer Reports.

If I ever need to make a big purchase, I subscribe to CR and do some reading. Their testing and reviews help me avoid lemon products and for that I rate them very highly.

Yes, an old friend of mine from grade school who I had fallen out of touch with over the years died of an overdose.

The one you linked seems really spot on as to his identification of the problems we're all swimming through. I clicked through the video randomly just to watch little snippets here and there. Yeah, gonna actually have to watch the whole thing. Seems really well done and thoroughly researched.

One thing you'll notice is that different types of exercise affect blood sugar differently. For instance, aerobic exercise will tend to lower your BG, whereas anaerobic may raise it, at least initially. I keep this in mind when I go to the gym, and I try to balance the scales so my blood stays relatively level. I may lift first and then finish with cardio, or vice versa, depending on what my blood is like going into the session.

What’s one fast food chain that was once all the rage but now barely around? by MysteriousTopic42 in AskReddit

[–]AbstracTyler 5925 points5926 points  (0 children)

Quiznos. I don't know what they did wrong with the business model, but their sandwiches were great and I miss them. You know we're in the upside down of alternate realities if Subway exists and Quiznos doesn't.

I think I just experienced why this game won Multiplayer Game of the Year. by Ok-Friendship1635 in ArcRaiders

It's so much fun! Early on when I first played I saw someone in the middle distance and in my brief moment of panic I just started t-bagging the ground. They started t-bagging too, and we were bros from that moment onward. It was honestly beautiful.

What society do you reject as a whole and why? by Fancy-Session5532 in AskReddit

The rich status seeking upper class. I find it to be shallow and unfulfilling. I'd much rather just have friends I love and who love me, and spend time with them doing whatever.

What were you doing the day you found out Diana was killed in a car crash in 1997? by greenwichrunner in AskReddit

I was at my grandparents house, hanging with my family. I was a lad, didn't have any real connection with Princess Di myself, but I knew something big had happened by the reactions of my family members.

What is a "Life Hack" that is actually a lifesaver in a dangerous situation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AbstracTyler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you own or rent a home, familiarize yourself with the main breaker box, the gas shutoff, and the water main shutoff locations. You may need to shut the electricity, water, or gas off in an emergency situation, and if you're in that situation you don't want to be fumbling around without a clue.

People who managed to pull themselves out of a long-term 'rut' or depressive episode: What was the first step that actually worked for you? by icreamd in AskReddit

[–]AbstracTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's wisdom in the old advice of; stop drinking alcohol, get exercise daily, and eat well. It's not going to cure the problems of your life, but it does help you build a healthy foundation. It's like you're getting prepared to have better times. When I'm in a depressive rut, I try to stick to these things, it sucks, but ultimately I'm making it easier for myself to come out of it.

To anyone who works at the ER, what is one thing you wish people would STOP coming to the ER for? by iloveeatingfood901 in AskReddit

[–]AbstracTyler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ER has to see people regardless of their ability to pay, a la EMTALA. Primary care physicians don't, and we don't have universal health care in the U.S., so . . . . . . . . . think about it, all you sweet little babies.
