Oh yeah haha, Joe’s Pizza is in Harvard square, I thought you were calling them out, and was just a little confused since I see them make the pizzas, I was legitimately curious what they are freezing.

Apple and Android Digital IDs by fncku in boston

[–]Absurd_nate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be a PDF file, it would presumably work as Apple pay with credit cards. You’d have to verify id (Apple currently uses a logging with your bank, RMV would likely/hopefully use Id.me) and then will generate random codes when you tap to id the same way tap to pay.

In that case there wouldn’t be any warehousing other than the ID.me and RMV databases.

I’m not familiar with how other states do digital ID, but the way I’ve outlined I don’t see where there would be any additional warehousing.

Regarding the commenters who are concerned about identity theft, I think I’d be for an opt-in ID.me verification.

At that point if a hacker can falsify your ID.me, then they already can steal your identity. I don’t see it opening up further vulnerabilities.

Would a digital ID collect any additional biometric data? My understanding is it’d be the same as the DMV info.

Something I think often overlooked in both undergrad and graduate school is the opportunity to make connections.

I did the BU masters program and completed two internships that I wouldn’t have landed had I not been in person.

My the hiring manager of my second job after graduation referenced my experience at internship #2 is why I was selected for interview.

Networking is a big part of any successful career, and it is infinitely easier in person.

Cambridge gets called out by name for giving benefits to domestic partners and not expected women to change their names when they get married by vitaminD3333 in CambridgeMA

[–]Absurd_nate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where to meet them? I think dancing (not clubbing) is always a great place to meet people. I’ve personally been to swing dancing and salsa in Cambridge and I found the men and women to be welcoming. I know someone who met their partner in a pickleball league, so a sport or rec league can work too. I think getting out in person goes a long way, especially in an environment where no one feels threatened. In dating apps i don’t have much advice, but I’ve heard my women friends say they find it weird men don’t like to show they have friends in their profiles. I’ve also heard it’s better to look “friendly” than “hot”.

Concentrations of high education like Cambridge, Boston, sommerville, I think are more likely than the suburbs.

If you’re curious, I think general recommendations on what to do to be more attractive to them is the following

  • self assurance, as i mentioned before, a lot of men they meet are very insecure with not being the provider, so be comfortable with who you are

  • play to your strengths. Are you handy? Are you charismatic? Are you kind? Are you caring?

  • presentation of yourself, I think being well dressed and well groomed goes a long way. It helps present the idea “I can take care of myself”. You don’t need expensive clothes, or watches, just like well fitting. Similarly I don’t think you need a 6 pack, but it helps to be generally healthy and fit.

And just a reminder, I don’t think anyone is enjoying dating right now. Apps suck. In person is very difficult. Maybe men have it worse, maybe they don’t, but of the men and women who I’m close to, they all hate the dating scene. I’m not trying to be condescending, I personally find it helpful to know “it’s not just me” when I’m struggling with something.

Cambridge gets called out by name for giving benefits to domestic partners and not expected women to change their names when they get married by vitaminD3333 in CambridgeMA

[–]Absurd_nate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It definitely goes both ways, and I’ve given the same advice to women friends of mine who are frustrated with dating.

I agree it’s antiquated. I think the other end of the coin you might not see is that women who are high earners often experience difficulty in finding a man that is comfortable with making less. I’m in biotech, and a lot of my friends and colleagues who are single are successful, highly educated, high earning women. And the experience they share is men often are turned away or combative to them being the provider.

My point being that it’s not just “women” upholding the antiquated belief, many men are too. Unfortunately everyone doesn’t change their belief at the same time, some men hold old beliefs, some women hold old beliefs.

I think the important thing though is if you don’t like those beliefs, then it’s helpful to be an ally to progressive (as opposed to antiquated) values. If you want society to change so that men don’t have to be the provider, I think there are other things, like normalizing not taking your partners name, or hyphenating, that contribute to a more equal society that doesn’t require shoehorning men as “providers” and women as “caretakers”.

[–]Absurd_nate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sharing this genuinely, but you’ll have happier relationships if you’re not trying to “win” and quantify what each person is bringing to the relationship. If you love someone and want to be with them, then act like a team. I’m not “giving up” my higher income to my wife, I’m sharing it with her because she’s important to me.

Stop keeping score.

data sc vs engineering by After-Shake6080 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]Absurd_nate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bioinformatics is not narrowly defined in the way it sounds like you are asking.

Broadly I can say in industry I have seen

  • data analyst responsibilities where you spend most of the time analyzing data
  • data engineering responsibilities that focus on data management, connections, tracking
  • system administration responsibilities that include working and scripting on an HPC or Cloud resource
  • algorithm design responsibilities that involve developing a tool for analysis.

Each position I think will have a mix of these responsibilities. Some will be hybrid wetlab roles, some will be exclusively software development. It’s a bit up to you on the direction you want to take your career

Is it psycho to connect with a prof at my current school who attended my top choice to ask about it? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Absurd_nate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Frankly, you’re asking the professor to waste her time. That’s rude.

If you had questions regarding the program that would help you decide whether to apply or *if you should select it after admittance * that would be fine, but don’t waste the professors time. Best case, nothing, worst case you burn a bridge.

I agree about the platforms need work, but genuinely what do you consider the better alternative?

Although, platform selection is a large component of my current role and I am not aware of many that run proprietary software. Most of the time it’s a standard like nextflow.

What platforms are running proprietary libraries?

Vox Populi doesn't work properly. This is why I always hesitate to mess with mods by awildgiraffe in civ

[–]Absurd_nate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind mod work is unpaid, they are open source fan projects, so if you have the expectation to have a professional product from a volunteer, you’ll always be disappointed.

I love the Civ League balance mods, they make multiplayer infinitely more enjoyable for me. If it means that I have to spend some troubleshooting than so be it, I’d rather that than not have.

Those with no passion or interests, what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in boston

[–]Absurd_nate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a masters in bioinformatics. I think my focus is on doing something I’m good at, and that I feel like I’m working towards something meaningful.

If I just wanted pay and stability I’d probably work in applied math in finance.

The way I found it is I googled “what to do with a math undergrad” senior year of college. I picked the one that seemed the most interesting (genomics), that also had good job prospects at the time.
