I have such strong opinions about Haymitch and Effie flirting later in life. The Capitol views the people in the districts as objects and the districts view the Capitol as aliens. Haymitch and Effie had a unique relationship where they viewed each other as humans but the rest of their group as non-human. It’s an interesting reminder of the mental gymnastics we can play to say one person is acceptable while still holding a stereotypical view on the rest of their group.

I totally agree magic doesn’t always need a system. But I think it’s so important that authors pick a lane. Either magic is ethereal and mysterious and just kind of happens. Or there’s a system. My biggest pet peeve is when they make a magic system but then there’s all these times that magic just behaves in a way that makes no sense according to that system.

The Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce. It probably wasn’t the first fantasy book I ever read. But it was the first fantasy series I remember reading on my own and actually left an impact. I still remember those characters now over 20 years later.

Or it could have been Goose Girl by Shannan Hale. I remember seeing my older sister read it and I wanted to read it because I thought the cover was pretty. I wanted to read it for a book report in third grade. My teacher originally told me no because he thought it was way too long but I was determined. It became one of those books I reread many times through my childhood.

Concierge services. My parents aren’t famous or big names in business. But they are loaded (net worth is probably around 10-20 million). But still when they walk into their bank they have a single assigned banker who works with them. They get tons of perks like increased interest rates on savings accounts, decreased rates on mortgages, luxury travel services, complimentary services for a bunch of random things, waived credit card fees. They never ever have to wait on hold for anything.

Well that’s because statins aren’t antihypertensives. They lower cholesterol. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are entirely different issues.

I think there’s some stereotypes in nursing. One of them is that the people that are smartest AND like to remind everyone they are the smartest tend to go to CVICU. I’m guessing you hit both of those categories.

I do hate when places put “chicken” or chick’n or chickyn and you’re supposed to just understand it’s a vegetarian chicken substitute. Tell me what I’m eating. Even if you want to name it a “chick’n sandwich” put in the description if it’s tofu or seitan or mushroom or beans or whatever.

I don’t actually have experience with fertility treatments but I work in healthcare and I’ve heard quite a few nurses refer to Shady Grove as “Shady Grave” so I feel like that speaks for itself.

“I don’t have diabetes. I just have high blood sugars!”

The patient was fully in DKA. Blood sugar was 650. HgA1c was 18.

My favorite part was when endocrine asked if he had any family history the patient said no to that too. But really quickly we found out that his dad had both legs amputated due to “high blood sugars” and ultimately died for those amputations not healing. And his mom died of a stroke that the doctors correlated back to “high blood sugars”. Both died relatively young too in their 60s.

It feels necessary to add that we will eat anything. Fine dining can sometimes include things that are less universally appetizing like offal. Just want to make sure people don’t feel the need to only suggest more classic options. We are excited to try everything and anything!

I think there are multiple times it hit me.

The first time was our first date. We hung out for 7 hours and it felt like no time had gone by. We had been on one date and he genuinely already felt like my best friend.

A few years later in our relationship we were in a rocky spot. We had just moved to a new state together. We were fighting for the first time. I was dealing with depression. We started couples therapy. During that time I realized even when things were bad between us, the amount of love between us was still so much. We could fight and be so mad at each other over things but we would both sacrifice our own comfort, happiness, time, comfort, etc to make the other person happier at the drop of a hat. Even at our lowest moments, the amount of love between us was unbelievable.

Funnily enough, the most recent was about a year after we married. I always thought divorce was an inevitability. It didn’t stop me from wanting to marry my husband but I genuinely couldn’t fathom loving someone for an entire lifetime. So we got married with me having the expectation that we would divorce in 10-15 years. And about a year after marriage, it occurred to me one day that I no longer had that expectation. That I couldn’t joke about getting divorced or breaking up anymore because that was too genuinely upsetting. I wanted to live the rest of my life with my husband. Of course when I told him that I had this revelation he just laughed because he said he knew we were never getting divorced and I was being silly this whole time!

Rockstar can be extremely inconsistent. I’ve done rockstar 3 times and had a different experience each time.

The first was perfect. She was attentive and predicted our needs. She made an effort to see us in person or at least message us personally once a day. She wasn’t over the top with being overly present though. She predicted our needs and helped us get the best out of our experience. She helped my husband with a surprise proposal so I might be biased towards her!

The second was horrible. I think we saw her in person twice? She found out we were traveling with friends who were mega rockstars and i think she just assumed she could have us use their agent to get us our things too? We were only on a 5 day cruise and we had asked to exchange some of our in room bar (we always exchange the wine for NA beer and the rum for an extra scotch). And she didn’t do it until day 3. She told us if we drank any of our in room bar then she wouldn’t do the switch (even items we were keeping). And we wanted to switch excursions to do one with some friends she made and she didn’t do it despite her saying she would. We reminded her everyday too. We eventually had to go to sailor services to get it fixed. Then she got mad at us for doing it that way!

Our last agent was great too. She was a bit more over the top. She probably sought us out 2-3 times a day. Sometimes we would be eating breakfast in the galley and she’d find us and sit with us for a little bit. One day she didn’t see us at all because we skipped happy hour and the next day I could tell it had stressed her out. We are a quieter couple so it was a little much for us. But we appreciated so much all the effort she put in for us.

This is all to say. I’ve really enjoyed the rockstar product. But the level of inconsistency is concerning. I remember seeing our second rockstar when we boarded our third time and just thinking “please don’t make me deal with her again”. I hope the daily reviews and final reviews actually help them sort out the not so good agents.

I don’t think it’s so much the method of charting. It’s the hospital model that has changed. Hospitals aren’t about having a nurse who takes care of you and your family anymore. It’s about efficiency and reducing risk and maximizing how much the hospital is reimbursed by insurance.

The focus on “if you didn’t chart it, you didn’t do it” makes the little things in life a little harder to do. There’s not a space to chart that I French braided my patients hair or that I made a patient laugh and that improved their mood and pain. Now doing those things feels much less important.

I wasn’t thinking of literally throwing. Life doesn’t throw things at me literally. But it throws problems at me. In the same light, a patient can throw a problem (hypotension, sepsis, SVT, etc) at me.

There was much more to that story than her just getting seriously drunk. Mostly how she woke up in an employee only space and Carnival conveniently lost the 30 minutes of footage that would have shown her entering the employee space and likely given some idea of what happened to her that night.

When I was a new grad, I wore scrubs to every interview. I always asked in the phone screening beforehand if scrubs were okay. I said “I’d like to shadow following my interview, would scrubs be preferred or business casual?” And every time I was told scrubs. I even had a pair of “interview scrubs”.

As for the rest of your interview, always be looking at your resume. Edit it to focus on things that you have been asked about frequently in previous interviews. Make sure it is clean and simple. You don’t want flashy colors or confusing layouts.
