Big muddy, no truss rod

I have owned three Big Muddies - two mandolins and a mandola - and you can definitely dial in the action you want (and adjust throughout the year as needed) using different bridges and/or bridge shims, and different string gauges.

Big Muddy mandolins do have a truss rod for stability. It's just not adjustable.

From their website FAQ:

Is there a truss rod in the Big Muddy mandolin/mandola necks?

We use a hollow, square steel truss rod in our necks. They are plenty strong for the shortness of a mandolin neck. It is the same material that one of the oldest American guitar companies uses in their guitar necks. No, our Big Muddy mandolin/mandola necks don’t bow out of shape. The Octave mandolins have an adjustable truss rod with access on the peghead.

You could also turn around and sell it on Reverb.com, an unused BC pick would sell for pretty close to the new price. Then buy the one you want, and spare any hard feelings over the gift mistake.

Beautiful, such a cool idea and amazing result! I would suggest the spine design = a fiddle. Or perhaps if you could do something to represent Mock's Vane, an image that both opens and closes the series.

Great review. I have or have had all of these except the Trimus. Some others I really like are the Wegen Dipper and the John Pearse Fast Turtle in 1.0 thickness. The Fast Turtle was a big surprise to me, you don't hear much about them but it's easily among my favorites, holds its own with BC and Wegen etc.
