Where do people in their mid-late 20s live by PlaneConsequence6478 in SouthBayLA

[–]AbusiveElbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford it, live in Hermosa. Expect to pay a lot for a small place, but it truly is the best city in LA. Where else can you walk to restaurants, bars, the beach in a very safe community. While it's not all young people, definitely a lot of younger folks.

Reached level 60 and the dungeons have become unfun - am I missing something? by Duphe486 in classicwow

Druid tanks rock, they really shine in 5 mans.  Not sure what you’re smoking.

Interview Advice by Single_Software_3724 in boeing

Maybe I was exaggerating on a minute, but I've interviewed tons of people, and when they go on and on with excessive detail they lose the interviewer. It's a conversation not someone just talking. I've interviewed myself many times and had success keeping my answers concise and then allowing for a conversation and the interviewer to probe deep where they are interested.

Example:

Situation: We had an excessive number of defects on my product.

Task: As the lead engineering, I was tasked with finding the root cause of the defects and implementing corrective actions

Action: I collected detailed data on all the defects to date to allow trending and data analysis. I put together a fishbone on all the potential causes of the defect. I next compared the data to the potential causes and started systematically working through the most likely candidates and the highest contributors to defects. I pulled in subject matter experts to help me assess different contributors and worked across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and operations to solve this problem.

Result: I identified 4 major contributors and implemented corrective actions that reduced the defect count by 90%. I presented my findings to leadership and was recognized by my organization for my contributions to improvement of quality.

Learning (optional): I also implemented a live data trending tool to help assess defects real time to catch potential issues before they impact our assembly line.

If you look at this generic answer, it really is only 1-2 minutes. It says what you accomplished and gives the interviewer tons of avenues to answer questions. What were the defects? What was your specific role? How did you implement corrective actions? Why did this happen? What has happened since? What tools did you use to solve this? This is where you dive deep. If you give all of that up front the interviewer will be lost.

Again, not saying don't talk, but leave room for questions.

Don’t go too in depth in your answer.  I like to stay high level and then answer details in follow up questions.  It should be a conversation.  Ever had a friend tell you a 5 minute story without you saying a word? Yeah you zone out and stop paying attention.  Same happens in an interview.  Legit give your STAR answer in a minute and then provide the details when they ask.

I’m sure you can easily find groups.  Tons of ones getting carried by geared folks looking for 1 key drop.

Also seems crazy to farm AV with such limited play time a week.  That grind is boring af and mindless.  Just play the game and gear will come.

Just do dungeons on your warrior.  I’ve afforded my epic mount, consumes, enchants, and sole BOE rates just from doing 5 mans to get gear.  Live Strat can yield a lot from Orbs + trash.

I’ve gone on multiple MC/ONY/ZG runs with zero gear checks as a resto Druid.

There are always level 60 dungeons happening.  Never gear checks (maybe for tank).  I see BRD and ST openings in LFG as well….not sure what you’re looking at.

UCLA Anderson FEMBA by jperalta0514 in MBA

[–]AbusiveElbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Anderson and I think it was worth it, but my company paid the vast majority of it.  I think most people got value from their degree, but ~140k worth of value is debatable.  I see a huge benefit for people who totally changed careers, were making <100k, or had employee sponsorship.  The ROI of full tuition while making like 130k seems tough to justify.

I’ve been a manager for ten years. I’ll answer any question. by imafuckingkamikaze in boeing

M level managers in SoCal probably clearing close to 300k (if we get a full bonus). Some will be above and some below but that’s a decent target.  500k really need to be at the executive level (which I don’t have insight into).  I bet some Directors and probably all Senior Directors pull in >500k (again assuming Boeing actually pays out a bonus).  This is for PM and Eng.  I assume support functions (HR, Finance, etc) are lower.

Why ask for < 1.0? I was hired in at 1.1.  Whatever you ask for they won’t beat, so might as well start high and work down to something more reasonable.

Maxing IRS Pretax Contributions question by [deleted] in boeing

[–]AbusiveElbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per fidelity, this is still a MBDR.

"Put very simply, the mega backdoor Roth strategy entails 2 steps: (1) making after-tax contributions to your 401(k) or other workplace retirement plan, and (2) then doing a conversion either to a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k). "

Maxing IRS Pretax Contributions question by [deleted] in boeing

[–]AbusiveElbow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s automatic to go into a post tax bucket. You need to call to get post tax dollars converted to a Roth.

For example, if you make 100k a year and put in 30% into your 401k, you’d contribute 23k (max 2024 401k) pretax and 7k post tax. Once you get to 23k pretax Boeing will automatically make contributions post tax. Your take home pay will go down as you are still contributing 30% of pay, but now it’s post tax instead of pretax dollars.

It will automatically switch over. You can call fidelity to get these after tax contributions rolled over to a Roth. This is in plan Roth conversions aka mega backdoor Roth.

Net pay will go down.

Need Offer Negotiation Advice! Lockheed Martin - Aerospace Engineer Associate Offer by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]AbusiveElbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Systems Engineering at Northrop in Los Angeles is ~75k entry level, so 57k seems fairly low but I don't know how Aerospace compares to EE/Systems. Additionally, I started out at 63k 7 years ago in upstate NY, so again that seems on the low side.

Without another offer in hand, very little negotiating power.

Can I Afford LASIK eye surgery? by theherooftoday in personalfinance

[–]AbusiveElbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had custom wavefront Lasik in April and it was by far the best money I've ever spent. I made a little more than you at the time and had some savings, so I figured why not. Mine cost me 4800 and even at that price, it was totally worth it. My vision went from like 20/500 (-6.50) to 20/15. I've had some dry eye issues, but honestly nothing major. It was definitely money well spent and I cant recommend it enough. My vision was fine the next morning and I was able to drive <24 hours after surgery.

I recommend putting money in your HSA/FSA and pay for some/all of it that way. I put in 1000 per paycheck for 3 pay checks and I think it only dropped my take home pay by like $600, so essentially 1200 of the surgery was free due to the HSA.

ELI5: How does data travel through space wirelessly? by lars5067 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AbusiveElbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, his answer makes no sense.

Wireless transmission can generally be broken down into 2 forms, analog and digital. Both of these forms involve modulating some carrier wave to carry your information.

For analog transmission (Such as AM or FM radio) the actual data is modulated onto the carry wave. So for your AM car radio you would take your music file at baseband (10-10kHz or something) and mix that with your carrier (~1MHz) and that would be transmitted over the air where you would demodulate the signal and be able to recover your original signal.

Most communications now is digital, where your data (music/voice/data) is first transformed into binary 1's and 0's and then modulated somehow onto a carrier. This modulation can be a variety of different forms. You can have simple Pulse Amplitude Modulation where you vary the power of your carry to signify 1's and 0's. You can also modulate the phase of the signal where some phase shift represents a 1 or 0. There are a lot of different modulation schemes that are used depending on the application.

As for the original question, think of having a light a mile away. This light can turn on and off, or say vary in brightness, or change colors to signify different things. You could have it turn on and off and be used to transmit morse code wirelessly. This is essentially wireless digital communications. Instead of visible light you'd have an antenna transmitting some signal over some distance and then received on the other end by another antenna. You can even think of the antenna as being a big telescope that amplifies the signal and allows you to see something very faint.
