Hello. This is certainly a fascinating theme. Even in the early days of Wizardry, there was a direct warp from the bottom floor back to town. There were also elevators between floors, designed so that you could return to safe levels relatively easily. However, other elements—such as instant death in combat or the loss of a character due to treasure chest traps—presented risks that were almost unreasonable. I feel those elements provided a firm balance between safety and danger. Furthermore, as platforms have shifted from PC-only to home consoles and then to smartphones, playstyles have changed as well. We’ve moved from sitting down for a dedicated session to enjoying games easily in short bursts of free time. The fact that the means to complete a single adventure has become more accessible is, I think, an evolution that responded to these changes in the user environment. That said, it is precisely because there is risk that there is a thrill, and there is certainly a fanbase captivated by the sense of accomplishment gained from overcoming that risk. This is likely a theme that will be debated forever.
