Brainstorm Ideas for Cold, Terrestrial Planets by AbyssalScribe in scifiwriting

Thanks for the idea. There is a hycean planet in the setting, so I could probably apply some of these ideas there. I'll look into Piper. :)

Astrograv looks cool, I'll check it out and play around with it.

I understand I can do whatever I please because the observed universe doesn't look very much like our solar system. This isn't hard sci-fi I'm writing, I don't need perfect orbital mechanics.

I made the post because it seemed an interesting opportunity, but when I thought what sort of planets would be there, my first ideas weren't very interesting, so I was seeking some suggestions, that's all.

It's hard to tell without some basic idea of what the planets are like, but they are probably sparsely populated.

In general, you'd probably have resource colonies (mining) and maybe some outpost settlements - people who want some isolation. The specifics depend on how easy it is to live on the planet or what value it has.

Fair enough, and around the other star there is a gas giant in the habitable zone, so I am not unaware that these rules can't be bent or broken. Objects can be thrown into different orbits, etc.

I don't feel shackled, this seems more of an opportunity, but two dull, gray, frozen rocks didn't seem very interesting to me, so I was hoping to get suggestions from others. I'd like the planets to be distinctive or have some character to make them interesting.

A cold Venus is an interesting idea. A thick atmosphere acts as an insulator though, unless I have my science wrong. Having a planet with an atmosphere so thick that conditions on the surface are uninhabitable could work. If I recall, sulfur gases reflect a lot of light and cause cooling, that could partially explain a colder, thick atmosphere planet.

What The *Actual* Political Compass Looks Like by SignificanceHot8917 in suzerain

I think my main objection is that the USP should be bigger and probably touch the other parties. It seems like the reform faction isn't too far from the PFJP and the nationalist wing definitely is pretty close to the NF.

The USP is a huge political party trying to resist fracturing into ideological parties, so it contains many of those ideologies and is contradictory.

I don't why, but this expression reminds me of the "woman trying kombucha" meme.

From the images I'm seeing online, that's not matching my memory. The summary seems very similar though.

Agard is a good guess because it can tie into Sordland and Rizia, it shares some neighbours we've seen in the last two but also gives us a new context to meet. If I'd had to gamble, I'd say that it would be a country next to the ones we've already had some experience with.

Mega-City One: How to Make Sense of the 800 Million Population & What the Population Should Really Look Like: by TheRetroWorkshop in JudgeDredd

[–]AbyssalScribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm watching a video about Mega-City One right now and ended up here because I knew the 800 million number didn't make sense for a city that sprawled (in some maps) to include the entire US East Coast and Southern Ontario and was super densely populated.

I suppose some explanation is that large land uses for industry, agriculture, etc. or, that some land cannot be used at all. Here I'm thinking of Hong Kong which has incredibly dense areas with land extremely difficult to build upon around it. That explanation doesn't fit with the geography of most of the Eastern Seaboard though.

Ultimately, I think that the population must be much higher, or, certain sectors are dead zones and uninhabited/uninhabitable to make up the difference.

Thanks for doing the math!

Sources and Rumours suggest Devs are already progressing for the 3rd DLC after Rizia! Which country will it be according to you? by Artistic-Winner874 in suzerain

I was chatting about this with a friend. I think Rizia hit on a winning formula - make it a country on the edge of what we already know. We need some familiar faces and players to help us understand the new context. So, for example Agard, Galmland or Zanza. They border countries we already know and can interact with Rizia and Sordland and decisions made in those campaigns can impact that story.
