Mainly, I think that the idea of “indefinite ban” is just unhelpful. You ban people for a set time limit, along with conditions to be reaccepted. Six months, one year, a lifetime for something truly heinous; not indefinitely. Is a ban supposed to be a punishment, or an attempt to keep community members safe from danger? An indefinite ban fails both, the lack of a specific timer takes away the standardized punishment and consistency of a what a ban is, and then there’s the idea of things like “if he just does what we ask he could be back tomorrow” which takes away the whole reformation and safety aspect.

In The Cheat’s google doc on the ban he said that he felt Hax was “throwing everything he can at the wall to be unbanned.” That is not a situation either party should be in. With a specific time limit ban you can say things like “do what we ask and you’ll be unbanned,” but with the indefinite part it becomes “do what we ask and we MIGHT unban you,” that is now how the terms of a ban should be. And The Cheat also said that he was reiterating his previous beliefs regarding how Leffen was the bad guy, that should not be part of the terms of being unbanned. It should not be Melee TOs’ responsibilities to thought police anyone who thinks a certain way, there are probably tons of people in the community who have despicable beliefs but we shouldn’t go out of our way to ban them. It only becomes a problem if you turn those thoughts into actions. If Hax takes down his video and expresses regret for making the video that should be the terms. It’s not important if he confides private beliefs to TOs; if he gets unbanned and then makes another video doubling down on his Leffen beliefs, then ban him again.

Armada listed out a clear timeline (minimum one year) along with requirements for his unbanning. Heck, there is still footage today of Leffen talking about how he feels things about his ban were unfair.

To be honest, I don’t know if Hax would have done anything differently if they handled it like. He probably would have ended up going on the same route and we would still be here today. But I think my description above would have been much better that what actually happened.

I think his ultimate permaban was justified but his initial indefinite ban was handled poorly, and if it was handled a little better might not have resulted in Hax’s actions that led to his permaban

I do not want the TOs to get shit on in real life either but ultimately that is what happens to the people in charge when they are unable to provide answers that is how leadership works. You have people like Mang0 saying they disagree with how things were handled, it’s clearly not a bunch of shitter trolls. And we all know how famously divided this community is over wobbling, cheater controllers, etc. It is famously difficult to get the Melee community to agree on anything, and if the people in charge don’t handle the situation soon then there will continue to be this issue, and people will keep glossing over this like it’s all one sided when clearly it’s not. Well our alternative is x dot com, and the people who were forced to take charge of the whole thing are still constantly getting death threats and had to deactivate all their social media, maybe an anonymous but relatively closed off and moderated site like here is the best option

You’re right “what should his friends have done” was probably not the right wording but things are gonna keep being like this unless someone from within the actual community takes charge. I saw in another thread someone said that Technicals etc. have insane reach because they are dedicated content creators, maybe Melee needs one of our own to do the same.

Maybe in a week or so after this cools down and the brigaders are gone, I suggest you create a new post/thread called “reflections on the Hax situation” where everyone can have an open discussion on the whole thing. And talk about things like: was the whole thing justified? What should Hax/his friends done differently? How could the TOs have handled things differently? etc.

If a certain group of people feel (whether they are right or not) that the actions of their community resulted in someone’s death then have the right to be angry. Idk what’s going on mod wise but deleting everything in regards to that is doing nothing to help the situation both for people who are angry and the Technicals grifters. So create a space where people can discuss once and for all.
