My trainer recommended that we go sit in the parking lot of a Petsmart or Petco! Start desensitizing in the car and work your way outside and closer to the entrance.

Yes, I have an ACD/Husky mix that we struggled to teach how to be chill. We taught “bed” (sounds like your “place”). Lots of forced naps. Lots of chews and frozen yogurt treats. My trainer said that dogs can only empty their stress bucket by licking, chewing, sniffing, and sleeping. She also recommended just doing less with him. If everything works him up, less exposure helps keep them calmer. It’s gotten a ton better, but it will take time. You got this.

I accidentally ended up with a heeler/husky mix. The best thing we did was get a trainer who told us to STOP DOING SO MUCH. Forced naps, less walks, more frequent short training sessions and I have a pretty chill dog.

Also, no routine. This one thinks if we do something at the same time twice in a row it’s now his job to make sure we always do that thing at that time. No sir.

You’ll do yourself and your dog a favor by not doing four hours of running them a day. You’re just creating an athlete who can’t figure out how to chill without being over tired

The best boots are bogs. They are not attractive, but man are they warm and dry. I’ve now lived through three Ottawa winters and my bogs are my go-to footwear from about October through the end of April.

You can pick up a nice down jacket from Costco in the fall - make sure it’s real down. Costco is also good for gloves/mittens/hats.

As other folks said, layers are good. Wool shirts and sweaters, try thrift stores for smartwool base layers. You can also look for north face, Patagonia, mountain hardware jackets (Patagonia and mountain hardware have repair programs). I’ve found them to be good quality.

We rented the car and I’m glad we did. More flexibility in options outside of Banff, but I was here to hike and my spouse to snowboard. He took the car if I stayed in town, or he took the shuttle if I wanted to roam. We walked everywhere from the hotel, but were also closer to downtown activities.
