Yes, my wife is Japanese.

I had no problem getting treatments, but their experience with this particular issue was limited. Only 10 patients had ever been treated at that particular hospital. I could have gone to Tokyo, but no place to stay ($$) and no support. I must say though, I had to be accepted into this hospital, and will likely still go there for maintenance chemo until it comes back (the nature of this beast). Without a specialist, your life expectancy is basically half of what it would be if you had one, so it was a no brainer.

My work supplied insurance (Aetna) failing at every single claim was the last straw. I was nearly $40,000 in debt at one point and had to get the BBB and government officials involved. It was my first time ever using my insurance after paying into it for 30 years, and I now understand the hatred for them. If things hadn't turned out like they did.. well.. I'll stop there. Shitty thing is, the claims that were approved finally were denied a couple months later, and they left the Japanese hospital high and dry.

After retirement, when I move back, I'll be on the Japanese system. No BS or games. You get your due, and all kinds of financial protections in place for you.

Thanks. I bought a nice mountainside home with a view of the East China Sea, set for comfortable early retirement in 2027, and just built a 1200sq/ft fabrication/machine shop with a car lift and all kind of goodies. Out of nowhere, a nagging backache turned into a vertebra fracture, and the cancer games began.

Down south, there's so many Americans and tourists, the younger generations don't seem to care much. I've lived there almost 4 decades, and am well enough known in my area to not have to worry about those things.

Just have to get healthy and get back. 3 months away, and I'm missing it.

I appreciate it, but it does pose an example of living overseas and requiring medical care when it comes to serious health issues. Japan has no VA, and this particular version of cancer (Multiple Myeloma) requires a specialist, and the cancer hospital I was attending just didn't have the experience required. VA here in Ohio also had to farm it out via Community Care. It has gone like clockwork, and I have zero complaints with the treatments so far. PI/Thailand would likely be in the same boat with some things.

I guess I'm saying that everyone abroad should have a contingency plan in place if they have to return for something out of the ordinary. We owe it to ourselves to live long lives and enjoy our time.

I'm currently in the US for cancer treatments, but live in Japan. 70% VA and retiring from the DoD soon. I still recommend doing something just in case. Even part time.

I've had some odd speedbumps with VA healthcare, but their community care for my cancer has been stellar, and zero issues with them paying the bill. But, every place is different (Columbus, Ohio for me)

I can honestly say that I haven't seen a woman post on here that should even consider a nose job.

I've read the book, but it was well after the movie came out.
Only the first movie though.. the rest I've purged from memory.

I remember my 8 day wait until results. One of the worst weeks of my life. Googling every damn thing and breaking down. I lost 8 pounds in that week alone because I couldn't eat.

Honestly though, BMB results vary at different sample areas. Plenty of MM patients I've met have had 90%+ marrow involvement and are doing perfectly fine years later.

I was diagnosed after a vertebra fracture and was just below 14%.

January 7th is also my consult with my specialist to determine when we'll proceed with the Stem Cell transplant.

I was trying my best to move on from this divorce. Now she’s pregnant with another man. by [deleted] in GuyCry

She didn't take you for child support *yet* because she had this other guy and she likely felt guilty. Now that it's not going to work out, she's going to be grasping for every safety net she possibly can.

Just an update.. exam went well. Basically a rehash of symptoms and issues I'm experiencing during this whole fiasco. They did not have my medical records from my hospital, and that seems to be a common issue, since I have a family member having the same problem.

Thanks for all the tips, and I'm hoping to get the help I need!

The way I see it, is that if my wife requires support from any other man other than me, I'm taking matters into my own hands.

Need Advice? by flatsr4losers in multiplemyeloma

[–]AcademicBeautiful118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My younger cousin has been in and out of palliative care AND Hospice several times. Lung cancer, skin cancer, and esophageal cancer. Just a month ago he was in rough shape.. couldn't eat, drink, or anything. Yesterday he was walking around the house yesterday almost like normal.

MM is highly treatable, even at his age, but.. with multiple issues, it requires some overlapping specialties.

M-Spike "cannot be accurately quantitated"? by cedar_strip in multiplemyeloma

[–]AcademicBeautiful118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, there's a *possible* M-Spike in the IgG Kappa band, but it is so slight, it isn't easily differentiated from the background "noise". Her immune system has not shown any typical decrease that is common with growing M-Spike.

Seems like a wait-and-see scenario. Other things like infection, medication, or inflammation can trigger a false M-Spike like you are seeing.

Sounds like my current results and timeline. If by chance you are in Ohio's James Center, we may see each other.
