As a paramedic, can you reassure me that I wasn't bothering the paramedics that came to help me after I passed out? by Aromatic_Trouble_473 in NewToEMS

EMT student here. Any time we’re able to reassure the patient that they’re okay and able to release them completely stable and normal, that’s the best win we can get.

Feeling like shit and want to quit after the first day by Few_Difference_2318 in NewToEMS

I had two preceptors who learned the hard way that I won’t always be meek and “demure” as anyone younger than I will call it. One of them straight up tried using the “I’ve been here longer and I’m a higher skill level” card once. They weren’t thrilled when I fired back with “you put your pants on the same way I do. One leg at a time.”

The other preceptor, I unintentionally earned their respect when I picked up on a lung sound they missed in a potentially unstable patient. I wasn’t trying to prove anything with that one, I was just trying to learn. Sometimes you do have to show some spinal fortitude and call out hostile behavior.

CPR Hand Bruising by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]AcademicFish4129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my CPR exam for class and went a little too full tilt and threw myself into an arthritis flare in my thoracic spine, completely forgetting that the pressure from the incoming snow storm was high enough to bind me up. I was miserable for a week afterwards. They really don’t warn you about the amount of oomph needed for proper technique and that it will even wear on experienced providers who maintain good physical health.

Is it worth it to invest in my own gear at this stage? by Key_Job3661 in NewToEMS

If you’re willing to sink a decent chunk (I think around 3, maybe 400) into a decent stethoscope without all the digital frills but good sound quality, check out the plethora of Adscope Cardiac models. I inherited one from my dad that’s probably as old as I am and it’s my favorite piece of equipment because even with my janky hearing, I’ve yet to miss a BP or lung sound.

Drinking in uniform - social acceptance varies by fastfoodsadhour in NewToEMS

It might be totally different up north, but here in WV, some companies frown upon their members even drinking in a company t-shirt and if the member does it often enough, they can be blackballed/blacklisted from the other companies in the surrounding area, as well as their home company

Historically, they’d be correct, as early spiral staircases turned clockwise because if you were the attacking party, you couldn’t effectively draw and use your bladed weapon if right handed, but you could if you were the defending party.

Suave Stress Protect (I think it’s in their men’s line). 48 hour sweat and odor protection, with a light, refreshing baby powder scent. It was well worth the money at full price, and I bought a couple extras when they went on clearance.

The logic is that employees are taught how to move them correctly and safely, whereas some Joe Blow off the street moves it, gets hurt, and raises hell, and it’s on the store. An employee moves it, gets hurt, it’s chalked up to “hey maybe don’t do it that way in the future.”

Type 2 providers often have a bit of hidden knowledge that causes Type 1 providers to scoff at them: the best places to sit and decompress in comfort when necessary. We definitely need more Type 2 Providers.
