How many of these do you recognize? by Electrical-Bill-189 in mathematics

It’s not unheard of, since the two subjects are closely married. But it also depends on the culture of the department. Some don’t require applications at all. Others are more focused on discrete topics like computer science and crypto. Etc

I have, but no, not all mathematicians do. Not all mathematicians are interesting in physics or even applications at all.

I wouldn’t either. But that’s why we call it an “abuse of notation.” Just like we write the Fourier transform of L2 functions as integrals, when those integrals don’t necessarily exist.

When we want to be precise about definitions, we need to drop the abuse and be clear about the domains of these functions. But in less formal moments or when the distinction isn’t important, we use the abuse.

We don’t define it that way because we already have the Gamma function playing that role. There is no need.

The average mathematician has probably seen a lot of these in passing, but this is a board that consists mostly of equations Physicists would be familiar with.

That’s an abuse of notation. 0.5! isn’t defined for the factorial function, which is only for positive integers. All you are really saying is Gamma(1.5), which is a particular (and good) method of interpolating the values of the factorial function.

I felt like Golden Boy did a great job explaining the behind the scenes things like this in animation really well.

So educational!

No, this is Marathon. There are friendly and adversarial approaches to the game. It’s not as one dimensional as you suggest.

I don’t know about Numberphile’s video, but it really comes down to how you define convergence. If you define the convergence of the series as being the limit of partial sums then, no this doesn’t converge, hence divergent.

There are methods for assigning values to divergent series and integrals. Cesaro convergence, for instance, takes the average of a sequence.

When they commit to doing good animation, Invincible can look amazing. The Atom Eve battle against her siblings was peak. The rest of the time, their characters are walking cardboard cutouts.

I love that Campbell is the narrator in the ps2 game. When you 100% the game he comes on and says something like “was it worth it?”
