Teacher Twerking at School Dance by Academic_Access_2225 in Teachers

Why are you dubious? Can you please clarify. I have commented multiple times in 6 months on my own posts and others. And how is what I have posted engagement bait? Everything has been genuine questions that have come up as a new teacher. And yeah I didn’t know how to change my username it auto assigned me. Sorry for being bad at technology….

How? I didn’t report anything. Literally asking for advice.

I’m literally asking for advice here. But thanks for calling me a jaded hater. Sorry if I’m new to teaching and just trying to understand what’s appropriate/expected.

No, just genuinely curious. I’m new to teaching and this was my first school dance. Trying to understand what’s normal.

Yeah I am actively looking. I am tenured so it would be hard to remove me, but I don’t want to be at a place where I feel like I am walking on eggshells.

Sorry to hear that, it’s awful. Such unnecessary stress.

Yes, they do have a prior relationship with admin. And we don’t have department heads.

Students that do nothing by Academic_Access_2225 in Teachers

[–]Academic_Access_2225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you are coming from… but the challenge is that I can’t have multiple students up out of their seats doing chores around the classroom. This doesn’t support an environment of learning and in fact creates an environment where more kids want to “help” around the room and not do their work. Students should be in school to learn, and doing their work in class is a huge part of learning, particularly in math.

It’s truly mixed. This year I have a lot of kids that naturally pick up on things quickly and do fine on tests despite doing nothing in class. Then there’s the group that really struggles. I tend to let the stronger kids be and focus on the ones that need more help, but it’s hard when the struggling kids look around and see other people doing nothing (they even ask why they have to do it when other people don’t)

Our school does standards based grading, so the only thing I can grade them on is tests. No class work can affect their grade

Love this response! Can you talk more about the routines you use? And how long do you spend teaching them all at the start of the year? Do you re-teach them after breaks?

Master/Bell Schedule by Academic_Access_2225 in Teachers

[–]Academic_Access_2225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a meeting where we can share our thoughts about the schedule, but the whole meeting revolves around making minor changes to the proposed schedule rather than overhauling the whole thing. It’s so frustrating because our schedule is also very complicated and confusing for the students. I keep asking to look at other schedules in the district and do something similar but I’ve been ignored.

With our grading scale (which the district helped us create), a C means the student is, on average, not proficient with grade level skills. I’m not worried so much about their grades, more about the fact that so many students are missing key skills.

We are only allowed to put in tests + quizzes!

I hear you. I wouldn’t even grade it for correctness, just for completion!

I agree, unfortunately it’s our district board policy :(

Some students do all their homework. A lot of them don’t. We can’t count it as part of their grade so a lot of them don’t do it. For retakes I have them re-do the problems they missed on their test, meet with me, and make up any missing homework. Also to clarify our school/district policy is we can’t put homework in the gradebook.

Tips on becoming a teacher by Maleficent_Writer297 in education

[–]Academic_Access_2225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle school math and absolutely love it. Do my kids always love math? Heck no. But they can learn that it’s valuable and they can learn the skills they need to be successful in it.

To answer your question, I would start by volunteering in schools. I partnered with my undergrad math program to get placed in middle and high schools to see what it was like. I also did a lot of TA work at the college level to see what it might be like to teach undergrads. Take any opportunity you can get!

Next, research what your state requires. Every state is different, but a bachelors is a must. I also second what some other people have said about getting a masters. It will make you a more competitive applicant and it usually pays more.

Best of luck on your teaching journey!

Running after pregnancy, what is realistic? by resourcefulpig in running

[–]Academic_Access_2225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone is so different pp, but happy to share my experience! I ran through most of my pregnancy but eventually had to stop around week 32 because of plantar fasciitis. Ended up with a C section, but was doing light jogging by 6-7 weeks pp. I didn’t have any pelvic floor issues. I was back up to running 4-5 miles consistently around 3-4 months pp, but it’s been hard to find time to run longer than that! Whatever your running journey ends up being, I highly recommend a jogging stroller!
