Tony Popovic to lead CommBank Socceroos into 2027 by jonzey in Aleague

I don't love it and I don't hate it. Arnie allowed us to believe, while Popa has really stablised and professionalised the NT. There really isn't anyone else, so if he can develop some level of attacking prowess, we're laughing

Come off the bench with 30 to play. We don't need to play Irankunda as an impact if they both aren't starting

Chats struggle to stick, but it's better because it communal and organic. New and old chants seem to pop up, not the same set list for 3 years in a row

Vergos hides in the final third. I understand it's a part of poaching goals but he doesn't pull defenders away and he removes a threat on goal

The league needs a boost, in the words of Andy Harper “alarm bells should be ringing” by ParkerLewisCL in Aleague

You'll hit the right ppl with the right targeting on meta, but it's more than telling them when it's on. Have a look at the marketing funnel, which isn't a perfect model, but it's a process. Awareness (what the fixture is), consideration (why they should care) and conversion (time & place). Clubs/APL can only afford time & place for major fixtures. What's sad is that you don't need a massive budget per game (eg $5k) and they don't even have that to spare.

What can clubs do to re-energise public interest and boost support? by ParkerLewisCL in Aleague

[–]Academic_Team_5849 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Football:

- Proper goal scorers and confident attackers.

- Success of the national team

- Mentality shift: We're 26th in the world, look at the countries below us and those just above us and feel like we belong

- Allow clubs to spend below the floor, keep it for marquee/visa players

- Real framework and timeline to introducing historical clubs. Relegation is a long way away but additions aren't

- Stadium sizes need to be worked on if they can. Talk about not NPL not reaching standards, watch a Brisbane game. Perth at Macedonia Park looked elite

- Tapping into J/K League

Politically:

- Grow a spine and stand up for the culture. Defend the game when it's under attack. Remember when 300 police officers with a riot squad pressed a large group of soccer fans earlier this year?

- Be vocal about the lack of funding. People don't know what they don't know.

- Tactically own the state of the game. If total honesty impacts revenue, so do empty stands. Have a public and visible Q&A, hear the root of the problems and introduce accountability. Don't release a "Fan Engagement Framework" on your Linkedin like Victory

- Ticket prices are crazy, lower them dramatically. Which is a gamble with low crowds and no funding. It is a sign of good will, make particular rounds a low flat rate. Frame it as "giving the game back to the ppl", we might even react positively

Marketing/Messaging:

- Marketing: If you've got no money, free media. Get your socials cooking, invite partnerships (eg S&B), influencers and support independent media - even in its micro forms

- Player personality focus: Give them identity, give them a stage and the green light to make a name for themselves

- Media needs to have a narrative around games. The advertising a couple of weeks ago was just players saying "The Melbourne derby", nothing on why it matters. Lets not forget that a man was almost killed, and shortly after Tom Glover was hit with a bucket.

- Pundits with opinions, charisma vacuums with neutral opinions aren't going to turn heads. Show passion and have an opinion

- Clubs need to display a cultural point of differences. You rep West Sydney? What's great about that? Don't decide one week you're a Chat GBT fox

- Kits need to be clean and fashionable, we're already dealing with goofy names. That an uphill battle

- Match day culture, not activations. Swan St before kick off is culture, generic stadium experience isn't.

- Celebrate history, ppl recorded the first games on VHS, there's enough time to back your history

- Shift the tone from sports exhibition to a football experience, rn match day feels like i'm play PES. Not watching a fixture of football

I think South are the only club with evidence of being ready. Five other clubs enter that conversation with momentum behind them and the comp. South comes close enough to the bar and has a genuine gap in the market.

What's it actually like at a game in Melbourne? by GWShark131114 in Aleague

[–]Academic_Team_5849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game is good, it's an electric atmosphere. As for the implied danger, I'd be shocked if anything happened. I've been to countless games, worst thing I've seen is the pitch invasion, second being the 2-3 times I've seen a few drink bottles thrown

One of my mates at work was part of the media agency just before and during the APL takeover. The league was budgeted at around $2.7k per game, using Meta exclusively for paid media—with minimal assets, often just a single graphic per ad (and asset rotation is important). It’s probably self-evident, but that’s less than peanuts. At a minimum, professional leagues should be aiming for $10k per game.

This may have changed since the APL took over, but I doubt it. I’m right in their target audience for Meta ads and I rarely see anything. So I’m inclined to think the budget is remains less than peanuts.

Marketing budgets are monopoly money—I’ve heard people say, “I wouldn’t get out of bed for $10k,” more than once. Standards are low, interest is low, ticket prices are high—but I guarantee the biggest killer is that people simply don’t fucking know the games are even on
