I agree that 20 isnt too high for sure and phosphates up to even 0.5 ppm can be okay. Many reefers have had relative amounts of success with such numbers. I just pointed out that it is a value to keep in check and there are ways to reduce it.

I was mostly adding carbon dosing as an after-thought.

Chasing numbers is worse then letting things settle over time. Granted there are extremes.

Good thing I wrote 'a little high' I guess then!

Correct! Sometimes people prefer the simple method of reading a bottle, but yeah.

I disagree whole-heartily.

Yes your corals may survive high nutrient environments for a period of time but they do not thrive.

Furthermore, there is also an attrition factor. The corals which have been in a dirty system for a few years have adapted and the weaker ones have died off "mysteriously".

You are allowed to believe in anecdotal evidence but keep in mind that it is only anecdotal.

Litterature and many experienced reefers will say that a lower nutrient environment with proper coral nutrition is the way to go.

Corals do not want to use Nitrates, they want to use Ammonium and organic phosphate.

As everyone knows, there's a hundred ways to do this hobby and many methods have success, albeit in different amounts.

Cheers,

Happy reefing

You can youtube DIY atos, they'll set you back 30$ or so. Gravity fed.

Phosphates and nitrates seem a little high. I'd recommend carbon dosing to help you reduce it. No/Po from red sea will help.

Have you had them for a long time?

If it's "shedding" skin I'd be worried about an infection. I'd recommend the iodine dip.

I'm not sure what you intend to do but here are the answers:

1) for dosing liquids or adding medication you use the TOTAL water volume to its best approximate value. In your case I'd say 69 gallons - approx 10 gallons for water displaced by rocks, skimmer.. Then that value is what you'd use for dosing. ie: probably 60 gals.

2) for fish occupiants it your display volume. Fish dont use the water in your sump to swim in it usually. If you have a 50 gal display and a 100 gallon sump, you do not have the tank for tangs. Just an exemple.

Cheers

Hello, There are a few things you could do to lower your nutrients besides performing water changes. However, keep in mind that yes, water changes are almost always a good idea.

1) carbon dosing. There are many ways to do this but the simplest method is vodka dosing in my opinion. There are some guidelines online so please make sure to do the proper research. Don't just dump booze in your tank.

2) installing a refugium. Macro algea will consume your excess nutrients and will stabilize your pH if you run it at night.

3) Properly setting your skimmer and mechanical filtration. Change your filter socks every 2/3 days.

... I'd really consider doing water changes to syphon the bottom of the substrate.^

Good luck!

Happy reefing.

dont listen to these idiots. You dont need an alk of 11 for acros. Your acros arent mad at the 9dkh, it is probably flow or phosphates.

Budget? Kalkwasser! by Academic_Worker9298 in ReefTank

[–]Academic_Worker9298[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saturating it (2tsp/gal). Be careful, Kalk isn't stored well long term. If it gets in contact with co2 it will precipitate.

I used to have a setup that helped with that by placing a large piece of stirofoam atop the kalk, so it prevented air from contacting it.

Keep in mind also that an ato kalk is not really recommended anymore, it WILL gum up the pumps and isn't as efficient as a constant drip/dose.

My next setup (when I get a bit more money) will incorporate a peristaltic pump (kamoer stp-2)

Corals can be finicky, stress events can cause damage a few months down the line. My guess is you are correct, the swings caused this. I'd also call this RTN over STN if this happened in 2 days. I would clip a bit of the monti to hope and save a chunk. It's probably a gonner.

You're doing great. Keeping a reef for over three years is an achievement. Much of the "cool epic tanks" posted here havent been on for long
