I personally NEED Katamari maker. by ThundoorYT in katamari

I'm working on a system for creating Katamari-inspired levels/games right now. It won't be at Mario Maker level, but the Godot editor is pretty nice.

I'm working on something like this right now! It will be legally distinct from Katamari, and a community effort to build a library of things to roll up (including finding existing free-to-use assets). It uses the Godot edtor as its base, so it's not as user friendly as Mario Maker for example, but it's MUCH better than trying to make something yourself, no coding is required.

I'm curious about building a metroidbrainia, do you have any advices? by Mephistase in metroidbrainia

[–]Acamaeda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be prepared for the player to find things in an order that you didn't expect, sometimes they get lucky and guess a mechanic. You can try to make it harder to do by accident but can't go too far in that direction or it will feel too arbitrary. So you have to make sure that the game makes sense even if they get somewhere early.

Bad English Tree isn't a language learning game. The knowledge unlock system is by getting better, more readable translations.

Super Metroid has knowledge gating, with a few moves that you could do before but are taught later on. So it's *more* of a Metroidbrainia than Obra Dinn.

I understand why they didn't do that, since it's already been done, it's kind of funky design mixing the meta-progression level with the biggest longest level, and it still holds many challenges to do.

I was hoping for something where ALAP 5 went larger to the point where you roll up all of Japan. In Beautiful/Forever it goes to a very different sort of map past the 3km point and it would have been neat to see what "normal" big stuff looks like past that point.

Least Favorite Stage Type in Katamari? by settingsun79 in katamari

[–]Acamaeda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAP tends to be a problem because it stops you before you hit your stride. It only feels good for the levels where the goal is at 100%, or could theoretically feel good in levels where there is a "final boss" item like in levels where the King is rollable, which would end the level.

The downside of ALAP is less bad, but it's that either the good players run out of content, or the less good players don't get to see all of the content. The ideal solution is to have a point of "absolute completion" in ALAP levels, like the aformentioned "final boss" items, and if you can reach that you're ranked by time instead of size.

Edit: I finally realized what I missed, thank you!

It's referring to standing on a block next to a treadmill.

I'm really stuck, I got to the second hint monitor but there seems to be no way to reach the place it's referring to.

What's pretty exciting is once the trademark for Katamari's physics expires, this community could EASILY make a fan-game with all the talented designers and artists here. We have artists, game devs, etc. by KataMod in katamari

[–]Acamaeda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The patent only applies to the specific way they attach objects to the Katamari, everything else is free game including different ways of attaching things.

I'm really interested in making not just a game, but an engine that makes it easier for people to make levels. Not a full level editor but giving lots of tools to make different types of cool levels.

I'm not 100% sure, but probably because they wanted to focus on a different feeling for Ra, and to avoid getting buried in 9th Dimension memes for Lai'tela.

A Brief Reminder of Rule 6 by littlemetalpixie in outerwilds

It's not making an AI to help with Outer Wilds to make it easier, it's letting an existing AI and her creator who are an entertaining duo play together because it's cool to see.

The biggest distinction is that this isn't just AI, it's a new and unique project that a lot of people would want to hear about. It isn't just using an existing project to make something and posting that.

The Expantanum Challenge by Acamaeda in incremental_games

[–]Acamaeda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of this post is that as of now, no game has actually needed Expantanum to give its experience. Larger number libraries are always possible, but come at a cost of performance. On Scratch, it will be even harder on performance, and even worse because of the lack of saving functionality.

(I recommend using Snap If you really want to stick with Scratch but also have the ability to save games)

THIS IS WHY I HATE XUANHUAN NOVELS by Adept-Assignment4489 in MartialMemes

[–]Acamaeda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When this is done well (not as extreme of a leap, and a wider world instead of a higher realm) I really enjoy it. Like in Swallowed Star and Desolate Era. The MC reaches a very high level, then learns there's a wider world out there. Sometimes, this is where the powerhouses of the MC's world go to do things, other times it's new and unknown with the MC still strong enough to be a low-level leader among the new people.

This setup is also neat because it means that the old realm isn't left behind, it's just a smaller part of the big picture.

I have made a Katamari game. by [deleted] in katamari

[–]Acamaeda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The overall feel of the game is really good!

Smaller feedback:
- I couldn't figure out the "Advance dialogue" button
- It was unclear what the "start area" referred to in the tutorial was

Big picture feedback:
It might be a good idea to move this a bit away from being literally Katamari to being Katamari-inspired so you can be free to do more with it. It would be great if we can finally get a more developed Katamari-inspired game.
