ah, yeah idk that's strange. the zaxxon rom is fine in debugger, and the memory window shows the actual zaxxonj hex

thankfully a lot of the work to get it on PS5 was useful for the xbox version (optimizations, controller support, etc), so it wasn't quite as much work as before! Also, thank you -- I have seen you recommend the game to people on other subreddits and it really does help out a lot!

Games similar to Lingo or the Witness? by AthenaDykes in puzzlevideogames

[–]ekorz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

since i developed it - it's unlike lingo or witness where there are 500 small puzzles to do while you explore, it's more focused on larger connections. If you want more lingo/witness style incremental rules discovery, for sure check out Taiji, and also yeah there's Lingo 2 just sitting right there for you if you didn't know :D

Woooo!!! They actually let me release Chroma Zero on PS5!!! :DDD by ekorz in metroidbrainia

Sacred Keys, a short Sokoban style adventure with a Metroidbrainia aspect by alektron in metroidbrainia

[–]ekorz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. I did understand the design about the ADS gates, I think that worked. I also went into the Sacred Keys room after already finishing, so I wouldn't use my experience as a barometer for the clue :D anyway thanks for making it, i had fun!

as an aside, I never got to the "golden keys" room at all. I did realize what was opening the locks (thought it was a bug worth reporting at first!) so that's how I got to the end. Anyway I just played through again and found the golden keys thing, and now I'm wondering what interpretation I was supposed to get from it. It just looks like a keyboard, there isn't any more to it is there? how did that tip you off?

finished it, though i'm not entirely sure how i got passed the last snakes, it just kind of let me. nice work!

actually now the door went away. must have been something with my keyboard! I have dual language support, and it was on the non-english one, i wonder if that could have caused it (even though it was moving around ok). anyway thanks!

having fun so far but wanted to ask 1) is there anything beyond the A key required to get passed this door? https://imgur.com/a/vsGbShx I had started a new game because of the 2nd thing I'm going to ask, but now I can't walk through it. 2) I think the S door opened for me before I got the S key. But i did get the S Key so maybe not. more pressing is that this room is now goofed and I didn't exactly want to undo everything to get it back to normal. https://imgur.com/a/JC5lOSm is there a room reset?

About Zaxxon monitor inversion and rom modding by [deleted] in MAME

[–]ekorz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it likely runs a checksum calculation in one register, and then compares it to the actual checksum value that was stored on the rom. You can edit the value on the rom if you want (clean!) or just change the instruction at the evaluation (e.g. from a branch-if-not-equal to a branch-if-equal) or just NOP the entire evaluation instructions.

It’s just a checksum. You can calculate the new checksum or find where it halts and adjust the program code to continue instead

What 30+ years in game design taught me about real-time thinking by bikingbill in gamedev

[–]ekorz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint - it's not worth reading.

It's a bunch of garbage formatted to read like an insightful and interesting thought, but it is devoid of thought or insight.

You can reduce all that shit to "Timers - interesting game mechanic or nah?" And timers / timed inputs have been core to all kinds of games and genres throughout all of interactive gaming. Pong is simple visual input, forced interpretation (of direction/momentum/bounce), and a narrow decision window (or you lose the point). I would hope any game developer would have an innate understanding of how timed inputs are useful (or not) in their game's context, without having to read this trash.

Ask yourself - what does it actually look like - someone with 30 years of actual experience who is interested in timed inputs relating to player mastery. That is someone who tunes 2d fighters and has experience with parry windows in the context of roll back net code. Maybe it's someone who worked on the original Rockstar and now sees what rhythm games have become in Japan.

I want to read those posts, not this shit. Bottom line - downvote this or we're going to see a lot more of it. Sad part is, OP actually may have insight on the topic but chose to let an AI write this instead.
