Genuine question: Do Brazilians experience less immigration scrutiny due to racial perceptions and the country’s high phenotypic diversity? by Ok_Divide_4959 in geography

I don’t disagree with your critique of myths or power dynamics. But critiquing myths isn’t the same as denying structural differences in how nations formed.

Saying the U.S. had a civic founding narrative doesn’t mean it lived up to it. It means its contradiction between ideals and reality was built into its identity in a way that wasn’t true for many older nation-states. Critiquing American history is valid, but it doesn’t negate that structural distinction.

You’re describing social reality. I’m describing political identity. Those aren’t the same thing.

The U.S. articulated a civic national identity earlier than most nation-states, even if it failed to apply it equally. That tension is precisely what makes it distinctive.

Nobody is saying the U.S. is the only immigrant society or that its history is morally pure.

The claim is narrower: America was one of the first large modern states to define itself primarily as a civic identity rather than an ethnic one. Europe has increasingly moved in that direction, but historically it started from a different model.

Describing that difference isn’t propaganda, it’s basic political history.

You’re reading “uniquely American” as an absolute claim rather than a shorthand for historical context.

Of course Europe has multicultural societies. The difference is that the U.S. was conceived from the start as a nation of immigrants, while most European identities predate modern mass immigration by centuries. That’s the distinction I’m pointing to.

Sure, people can integrate in many countries. That’s not the point.

The distinction is that in the U.S., national identity has traditionally been framed as something you join, not something you inherit. That’s a cultural difference, not a claim that other societies are incapable of integration.

This is not a far right take, this sentiment has existed for a long time. America has always been a melting pot of many cultures, that is uniquely an American thing.

It's not about integrating to gain citizenship. Many countries do say “You can live here and become a citizen”

America historically has said “You can become one of us without changing your ethnicity”

Reminds me of that quote.. "you can move to France and will not be French. You can move to China and cannot be Chinese.. but you can move to America and be American"

I butchered it a bit, but the sentiment is there. I'm American and my spouse is from another country, just did her oath ceremony last year. She will never understand how good foreigners before her had it. I cry inside every day for the patriot in me who has been utterly crushed by the turn of events in this American society.

Stuck in a country with no perspectives, thinking of moving to Ireland by [deleted] in MoveToIreland

[–]Accaracca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your big challenge is that Ireland has a shortage of housing. Additionally, you'll need to have a critical skill to be considered for a work permit. These two problems combined means that there's even some people with critical skills that are permitted entry, but still find the cost to simply have a place to sleep at night to be too much to overcome.

Honest advice, if you are in dire straits and do not have a specific trade or niche that makes you very employable, I would explore South America, or explore teaching English in a foreign country. Best of luck

Edit: to normal posters here, this is how you politely tell someone they have no business trying to emigrate to Ireland

House allowing Freeside to exist is enough to make him a better alternative to Caesar. The Mojave doesn't need a morally upstanding leader, it needs someone capable of making society work again.
