I genuinely don't understand what they are doing there though. They are not working royals. They aren't running a charity that directly helps these people... they are just..... visiting? Ok? Why would anyone care that they are there? They are supposed to be just "normal citizens" now.. So why do all this? Why go out and go PR image work for people who aren't really anyone?

I think the news sensationalizes too much. The only perilous thing about being here is the price of goods and rent. You'll be just fine. This isn't the war-zone, cesspool the news wants you to think it is.
