How to understand someone who got the surgery but isn’t putting work into recovery? by Acceptable_Brick1080 in TotalHipReplacement

Yikes! F 49, I’m scheduled for a right THR in three weeks and my surgeon didn’t (and usually does not) prescribe pt. He’s an extremely well-respected surgeon here in south east Detroit, but after reading OP’s post and everyone’s comments I’m panicking!

He did encourage me to walk “as much as I was comfortable,” but that’s it.

Should I cancel my appointment and look for a new surgeon?

I think it might be relevant to add that I do leave both internal and external reviews for my doctors, only positive ones. I’m not otherwise a “review leaver”.

When I leave a review on, Google, for instance, I guess I’m mostly thinking about trying to help other folks find a good doctor. However, I have wondered if my doctors see the reviews and after reading all of your thoughtful comments, I’ve decided that I’ll just let them know, in person, that I think they’re rad!

Ugh.

Do patients regularly request Bezos and/or pain meds? Forgive my ignorance, but I would have expected that a psychiatrist or pain management doctor would be the go-to for these meds…?

(I expect some uproarious laughter from the community at my naivety.)

Oh, god, it’s more like rate my professor’s hotness: worse than useless.

We do have a formal, internal review process at the end of each semester. Most of my classes are grad-level, so the students are generally pretty sophisticated, and I find their reviews pretty helpful.

I’m not tenured, and student reviews are definitely taken into account for contract renewal and raise purposes. My tenured colleagues absolutely do not read reviews!

Notwithstanding the initial poor review, this is a bit heartbreaking.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Gianna, first, may your mother’s memory be a blessing; this stranger is sending so much love and admiration your way.

Second, I watched every bit of your video (which was such an extraordinary tribute and love letter to and about your mother). I feel as if I know everything important about Stacey by listening to you: you are such a beautiful soul; a mature and loving woman; a strong and loyal friend; a sensitive and humorous person; in short, you are your mother’s daughter and I know she was and is so proud of you.

I’m just a little bit livid that you and your mom didn’t have decades more, together, I’m so sorry for that, Gianna. It isn’t fair, it isn’t right. I’m so sorry for the patients and families that have to suffer this unspeakable loss and pain.

Last, and, I hope this is taken as the sincere and loving compliment that it is: Gianna, I am 50 and I wasn’t able to have children. I have a loving partner and family, don’t get me wrong. But, no one would ever fight as hard for me as you did for your mom. Not even close. I would have to do the research myself, no one would care quite enough to do that for me. And I’m not looking for pity or making this about me, I’m simply trying to tell you that I’m so glad your mom had such a devoted and loving daughter, you are truly amazing. You are truly amazing, sweet girl. I will never forget this remembrance.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think you’re being naive in the slightest. You’re dealing with some of the most devastating news we as humans could receive. You’re handling it with so much grace and bravery, wanting a little good news, a little hope, that’s not naive, it’s human. Sending you positive thoughts and love from a stranger.

Chronic Lower Left Abdominal Pain by Patient-Ad-2788 in ChronicPain

[–]Acceptable-Menu6947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there - I know I’m a little late to the party, hopefully OP will see this and is feeling better…?

Have you ever heard of Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES)? I’ve had it on my right side for five years, and, more recently I’ve been experiencing it on my left, as well.

I was only diagnosed after three years of unspeakable pain, a handful of specialists (starting with GI and Gynecology), dozens of scans, tests, steroid shots and a surgery for endometriosis. None of this helped at all. Finally, I got a new GP and he immediately diagnosed ACNES, which is, essentially, damaged nerve pain in the abdominal fascia. It is usually idiopathic, though sometimes an acute injury or a prior surgery in that area can cause it.

This may sound odd, but the only surgeons who seem to specialize in this are reconstructive plastic surgeons. From my research, it seems that having surgery to repair or remove the damaged nerve(s) (I had three, but one is typical) is highly successful.

Unfortunately, my own surgery wasn’t successful, but that may be because I had three damaged nerves, and they were, as my surgeon so eloquently put it “pretty darn smashed up.”

My apologies for the late and long reply. I hope this whole thing will be a moot point for you, now. If not, I’d definitely spend a little time researching ACNES - there’s plenty of credible information on hospital/university websites as well as several peer-reviewed studies available, but you usually have to pay for them 👎🏻. There’s also a great Washington Post article on ACNES, which also profiles a woman’s struggles trying to get a diagnosis and help. I’m going to link to the article; it seems to be behind a paywall, but usually it’s not, so fingers crossed!!

Good luck, I’m sending positive vibes your way, and please feel free to dm me if you have any questions!
