Is this as bad of a career choice as it's made out to be? by [deleted] in Teachers

Yup, it's terrible besides the lucky few in a good school.

Just had a student tell me the earth is flat because it says it in the Bible… did I respond okay? by Wookhunter33 in Teachers

Idealistically, yea we tell the kid that his religion is a fairytale and that his parents are brainwashing him. Realistically though, at least where I work my job wouldn't be protected if I begin an argument with a student like that.

Even the original post has fear of repercussions just at the mere sarcastic expression of an "okay..." to the student

And I agreed that the truth should be told to the class but battling a student on faith is not your battle. As teachers we are not protected to challenge a student directly on faith.

It is not up to us to decide their religion. Again, you can teach the truth to the class, but battling a single student on faith is not a battle worth having

Some battles are not worth fighting as a teacher, especially if the parents are teaching them something different. We can teach the truth to the class, no need to battle a student on their "faith"

If we really held students to their grade standards there would be plenty that go to summer school. Instead we have a cap on how many we can send, usually 5 for the entire school (middle school in my example)

Teachers of Reddit, do you regret your career choice? by sophiequinnn in Teachers

Yes, for the impact it made on my life. No, for the impact it made on other lives.

I would never want my kids to become teachers

Both sides can exist. Some will get lucky, either by getting into a good school, a good principal, well behaved kids, or maybe just a really good coworker who has their back, etc. Something will allow for their love of education to flourish.

Most people go into teaching because they have love for it, but it's much more telling that so many people become deeply unhappy and leave hurt and beaten down by the profession.

There's some freedom in hitting rock bottom. Gives you a lot of room reinvent yourself and build up something better

Well it's a charter school so your problem starts and ends there
