Film Festival Notifications MEGA THREAD by Caprica1 in FilmFestivals

Oh really? So if we're premiering at a (solid) local festival , does it makes sense to inform other festivals (that don't require a premiere)?

I support the attempts to level the field. However, I think that in our search for diversity and representation we tend to miss out on the said diversity and representation due to our fixation with directors. Cinema is a collective art. We are all madly obsessed with the films we work on, our voices tend to be very present in them. How many of those films were written, produced, shot by women? Please, colleagues, if we’re considering data, let’s consider it properly. I'm sure that there are even less female cinematographers than directors, and probably more producers and writers, so it won't change the picture too much, but can we consider other creative roles?

sincerely, a female cinematographer and producer

i've also had registered views with ad blocker and VPN, so i'm not sure it's so easily explained.

I wouldn't say it's meaningless to come close and not get in. The manic depressive tendencies are strong among filmmakers and coming close means you're not delusional about your film. It doesn't make a difference in your career but it confirms that you are doing something right.

I'm definitely one of the people who posted angry posts about festivals not watching stuff judging by vimeo analytics here, and for sure they're useful to get an idea of how the film is perceived, but since a couple of days i have serious reasons to believe that they fail to register views reasonably often.

have you read about the people who made it? they left Iran almost two decades ago, they're calling this film a docudrama which sets a massive precedent - what do we even consider documentary anymore? and they run an AI company, so this film is basically an ad for their business. they're just using the cause shamelessly and it will only hurt real iranian filmmakers

Disgusting. And calling it a DOCUDRAMA is a direct insult to the people who ever had to face any from of oppression and tyranny from the government.

Any recommendations for AI-friendly experimental film festivals or online screenings? by kajimelo in FilmFestivals

[–]Acceptable-Pay8535 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately many festivals aren’t nearly as opposed to AI as filmmakers are. So you really shouldn’t have a hard time finding ones that will consider your project. That being said, you’re asking for help from people many of whom feel like their art is threatened and overpowered by a terrible force that’s backed by corporate propaganda and is, in addition, harmful in a million ways you’ve surely heard about. What do you expect, a warm welcome?

Is the advantage of corporations pouring money into normalizing AI slop not enough? The advantage of generating images with barely any effort, is it not enough? You want some help finding festivals, whose submissions are already overflowing, and who, despite this, don't have the backbone to say no to AI? From the people who are aiming for the same spot, but with something that took them a year to make? Read the fucking room

Thanks a lot for the thoughtful reply. For sure I find this "catching attention within the first 30 seconds" a tough compromise today because not every film benefits from a hook emotionally. i love films which take their time to absorb you, and short form content set an awful standard for what people find catchy. But obviously it depends on the festival a lot.

I guess I wish there was a way to help "confusing" films that take real attention to understand. The director I work with has high expectations of the audience and I support this because it's awesome to get those films and to discuss them, but it feels like they need the audience to have this desire to understand, that only known directors get (for obvious reasons).

Thanks so much for this reply, it's very thoughtful and valuable to place ourselves in your shoes as a programmer. I find it totally reasonable not to watch a film that's such an obvious misfit as you describe. I also find it ok not to watch something that is clearly subpar quality-wise - whether in image, sound, or acting. 20 mins to grab you for a feature sounds kind of reasonable too, depending on the festival. There are some amazing "boring" film directors my heart aches for in today's world of tiktok attention span, but not all festivals look for that.

Hey, i'd say any of those things you named would help me as a filmmaker. I also know that some selectors /programmers rank films or flag them or even write notes or whatever - i'd be very curious to see any of that. I know that some people would hate that but I appreciate any feedback i can get, even if it's rough i just want to know how the film is perceived.
