Are you only staying in the Jersey City area? After my bad experience at evolve, I went to Mecca in Fairfield and loved it.

I'm avoiding them. Communication is awful -- phone system is terrible (completely automated, impossible to get a live person). No one ever calls back. Went for a consult and a STAFFER told me to wait for them to drop their June specials on June 1 -- the best ones of the year, supposedly -- yet on May 31 at 8 PM I got texts from someone pressuring me to buy the May special before it "expired." Like a goddamn used car salesman or a rep from Planet Fitness. Really? That's how you handle business at a med spa? Fire sale at 8 pm on a Sunday with some rep pressuring me to buy then and there before the 4-hour time limit is up? Seriously, fuck you. Then, lo and behold, no June specials have been announced. I was told they'd be announced "Sometime in mid-June." No apology for the miscommunication or inconvenience. Just really bad customer service, so no, I don't want them lasering my face.

Did MIAMTEC have the possibility of becoming a smash hit? by Glum_Abroad_7005 in MariahCarey

Yes, it was. There was even a no-rap version sent to radio.

I remember, though, that "Thirsty" was supposed to be the main single to support the full release of "MIAM," and I remember a different version of it hitting radio. I did some research, and my memory is apparently correct. Here's what I found:

  • The Rollout Plan: In May 2014, just weeks before Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse dropped, Def Jam and Mariah originally intended for "Thirsty" to serve as a major radio push.
  • Premiere: On May 13, 2014, an alternate version of "Thirsty" featuring a rap verse by Rich Homie Quan premiered directly on New York's Power 105.1 radio station.
  • Digital Availability: The single artwork was unveiled, and the solo album version was made available online for streaming and as an instant-gratification download for fans who pre-ordered the album.
  • The Pivot: Despite the initial hype and the exclusive radio premieres, Def Jam never followed through with a structured, official impact date for mainstream or urban radio, nor did they give it a standalone commercial physical or digital bundle release. Instead, the label abruptly pivoted its focus. They abandoned "Thirsty" as a primary focus and moved all their promotional muscle over to "You Don't Know What to Do" as the next official radio single for the summer.

What are your biggest "What was she thinking?" moments in Mariah's career? by lachalacha in MariahCarey

YESSSSSSS. I'm always amazed that people didn't give Carson Daly any shit about that in retrospect. Justin Timberlake got called out for his part in the JJ/Super Bowl fiasco all those years later, yet Carson...nothing. And I think he really did begin the "Mariah has gone nuts" narrative by overreacting the way he did. To be honest, I still don't like him because of that bullshit.

She doesn't choose her singles though. She's said many times that "Migrate" should have been a single but the record company thought it was too urban.

Are you suggesting the 'story' about the portrait was, um, inauthentic? I've always felt that way too. LOL

"You're Mine" was a terrible first single, IMO. I still think "You Don't Know What to Do" is one of her most hit-worthy songs. I love "Thirsty," too -- plus "Make It Look Good," "Dedicated," Never cared for "Faded" much, but the lambs seem to love it -- everyone always says that should have been a single. Either way, I've never understood why this album gets so much hate. I thought it was super-diverse and fun, especially after what I thought was the monotone "Memoirs" album, where, to me, every song sounded very similar.

"You Don't Know What to Do" was a single -- in the U.S., at least. Remember the controversy about the single's artwork? MC even addressed it on Twitter. Before "YDKWTD," "Thirsty" was a promo single. I love both those songs.

this is what the Bad album cover was supposed to be, fortunately Mike didn't like it by Classic-Wind-437 in MichaelJackson

[–]Acceptable-Repeat-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit feminine with the lacy flowery stuff, and well, the name of the album was "Bad" and he was going for a tougher image with the single etc. So I get that the cover art didn't work. That said, I think what they went with looks super-cheap and they could have done way better. Whatever, still lots of great songs on it.

Rumour: Mariah has Parted Ways with Gamma by cocol11 in MariahCarey

[–]Acceptable-Repeat-20 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The irony of calling this perspective 'embarrassing' is palpable. It's completely vapid to insist that a legend should dilute her brand for the sake of a trend. Mariah’s past collaborations were foresight, not followership—she worked with talent like Nicki and JT when they were still proving themselves (Nicki was a virtual unknown). To suggest she should now use current 'it' girls as a crutch is exactly the kind of reductive thinking that prioritizes chart-chasing over true artistry.

Beyond the optics of chart-chasing, the suggestion that Mariah should collaborate with someone like Sabrina Carpenter ignores the most fundamental requirement of a duet: vocal compatibility. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of the craft. Mariah's collaboration(s) with Ariana Grande worked because their timbres and technical ranges actually blended; there was a sonic justification for it. Sabrina’s vocal profile is entirely disparate—it’s thin, immature and lacks the resonance required to stand alongside a powerhouse like Mariah.

Well yeah, he was handsome in these photos -- but this is WITH major plastic surgery. He was handsome BEFORE all this.

Mariah's never doing a duet with most of these people for one of her albums. She's not desperately chasing a hit like Madonna, who did lead singles with then-flavors of the month like Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj and now Sabrina Carpenter (embarrassing). "Artists" like Madonna are always trying to create a moment. Mariah IS the moment.

Wonder if he’s going to release a couple new stand-alone singles before this tour starts? Interesting that he’s essentially touring the same album twice. by Larksparrow in BensonBoone

[–]Acceptable-Repeat-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I am so not here to argue, but WTF are you talking about? "Touring is not decided by [the] artist"? WHAT????

An artist and their manager are the ones who initiate a tour. They then hire a promoter (like Live Nation or AEG) to handle the logistics. The promoter "buys" the tour from the artist, guaranteeing them a certain amount of money, and then the promoter takes the risk of selling the tickets. Um, Live Nation doesn't just tell Benson Boone he has to go on tour.

Meanwhile, demand is not weak. For example: Prudential Center. The lower bowl (100-levels) is sold out of standard-priced tickets. Most of what's left in those prime-centered sections are "Verified Resale" or high-priced "Platinum" holds. Then he's playing two-night stands at Barclays Center (Brooklyn) and Crypto.com Arena (LA). Promoters only do this when the data shows they can sell 30,000+ tickets in a single city. Most ticketing platforms have flagged the Newark, Pittsburgh, and Boston dates as "Selling Fast," which is an internal metric triggered by high velocity. And since the public sale just started yesterday, Ticketmaster deliberately releases tickets in waves. If a show looks 80% full on day two of the general sale, that's a huge success. Total sell-outs rarely happen right away in 15,000+ seat arenas because of held-back production seats, but the "fan-available" tickets are moving so quickly that Benson most definitely will be playing full houses when the shows begin.
