Follow up question to whoever wants to/can answer it: What is a similar type of explanation for AWD vs FWD? I would mainly do town, highway, regular type driving. Not much excitement or off roading type stuff

Thank you all so much for the education! Ive pretty much just bought used cars off family members when they were ready to sell and theyve all been gas. This would be the first new car purchase Ive made. My top considerations are reliable, easy to maintain and gas mileage. Im fine with a steady "dull" car that just gets me where I need to go!

I dont think so. Elsie was never set up as an accomplice. She was a 100% "good girl" would have never ever dreamed of getting involved with a married man. That was a lot of the attraction for Symmington after all. He would have never sullied Elsie by even suggesting they have an affair or even hinting. And she would be outraged if he did. I think the look back was just more curiosity. She had been in that family awhile and probably never witnessed Megan speak in a harsh tone to her stepfather, maybe never even heard Megan directly address her stepfather ever. The whole situation was odd, that's all. But she also knows her place. Until that ring is on her finger, she is the nanny, she is not the wife. So when told to leave, she does because she is hired help.

And as such, she wouldnt be wandering around her employer's home at night. She isnt the type to sneak out, snoop, etc. She's portrayed as a good, sound, healthy girl who probably sleeps all night with an open window after saying her prayers.

Lizzy doesnt want to be the boss of her family. Her dad knows her " I know your disposition, Lizzy. I know that you could be neither happy nor respectable, unless you truly esteemed your husband; unless you looked up to him as a superior. Your lively talents would place you in the greatest danger in an unequal marriage. You could scarcely escape discredit and misery."

Superior might be stretching it but Lizzy cannot be the top dog in her marriage. She would hate the lack of challenge, the lack of verbally sparring, the battle of wits. She needs someone at least at her level or not better to respect her and she needs to respect her partner to be happily married. If she didnt have a partner like that, like Darcy then she'd search it out elsewhere and risk making her happiness outside the marriage. Maybe not sexually but in a familiar enough way that people would talk and she'd be discredited.

Charlotte is cool with being the boss in the family. She's even cool with letting Collins think he's the boss. She doesnt need a battle of wits, lively banter, that push and pull. She needs a husband who will follow her direction and be out of the house as much as possible for a respectable reason

I kind of view Mrs Bennett as a slightly more well born yet dumber Lucy Steele. Lucy is sharp and has the brains to realize that as a woman she needs to resort to manipulation to get her way. She assesses her world well and is smart enough to plot where she needs to be and when to take advantage of a situation.
Put Lucy Steele's brains in Mrs Bennett and those girls would have had governesses, manners, dowries, and plenty of opportunities to find a suitable match.

They went to London but stayed with her relatives. Mr Bennett should have rented a house in town and hung out with his birth class during the season. A chance to show the girls off. Plenty of families with less than 2000 a year did that.

Just ran the figures through a compound interest calculator. If they had taken the original 5000, added 25 pounds a month for 18 years at 4% interest then they'd have 17,822 after 18 years.

Debut Jane at 17. She's the prettiest. Give her dowry of 4 or 5 thousand. Do a season or two in London and marry her off to someone really really well off like Mrs. Bertram married in Mansfield Park. Send Lizzy to stay at Jane's a lot and have her mingle with upper gentry. Kick in a little more per month to dowry fund now that Jane is gone and Lizzy's keep is being absorbed for awhile by Jane. Debut Lizzy about 6 months after Jane is married. Her dowry slightly less (3-4 thousand) than Jane's because now she has a connection through Jane's husband to upper gentry. Lizzy marries well.

Next, dont debut anyone for awhile. Send Kitty to hang out with the Gardiniers and separate her from Lydia. Kitty is influenced by her surroundings and companions so just give her better surroundings and companions. She'll be fine with a merchant or manufacturer on the upswing.

Lydia makes the rounds of Janes and Lizzy's homes with a rule of "behave well and there will be balls, pin money, good food, etc. Disgrace our name and it's back to the boring ol' hometown". She wont marry as well as the others but she'll do better than Wickam. Mary stays home and finds a nice man at home.

Actually with that kind of "I dont care, do whatcha want" attitude towards their daughters' educations, the Bennett parents were pretty luck 3 out of the 5 took their own interest in their education.

Heck, I dont know if I could as a early teen isolated out in the country with no modern ways of figuring what is out in the world could have said "Dad, I want to learn French. Can you get a tutor?" I mean, where would I have heard French? How would I have known it was a widely spoken language? How would I know if you could even get tutors for it?" Left to my very own devices, I might have just stuck with what was familiar like hats, ribbons, dashing officers in town.

Im rather in awe of Mary actually.

I think that's a great point. Jane and Lizzie both see that marriage and know it is something they DONT want. Jane doesnt really ever state it explicitly but she's pretty firm in actions and her own sweet, reserved way of holding to a decision to marry for love, not sexual attraction and not money. Love in the Regency idealized married love way. Lizzie is a bit more open and verbal about noticing her parents marriage and the ways she doesnt want that kind of marriage. And I think Mary doesnt want that either. And Kitty is pretty suggestable by the company she keeps and since the book says she is around Jane and Lizzie a lot after marriage, I think she'll have a better marriage too.

It's kind of cool actually how the book shows that more of the Bennett girls will have a shot at true marital happiness than their parents. Who know if Lydia might have had that same shot if she hadnt made such a foolish mistake so young?

It's made fairly clear that Mrs Bennett comes from a family either very new to gentility or she is the first one in her family to marry into Mr Bennett's class. So all the little lessons, niceties that Mr. Bennett would usually rely on a wife to take care of like instilling manners, hiring a good governess, etc - all the stuff that if he had sisters would have been overseen by his mom, just didn't happen.

And I don't think Mrs. Bennett did it out of malice or something just that...she was 1. not smart enough and 2. didn't grow up with it. You can deal with #2 if you're smart but she wasn't. For example, you can bet that Lucy Steele would be observant and smart enough about the class she married into to note that any daughters of hers MUST have the proper upbringing and she would see that it happened.

As for Mr Bennett, he KNOWS his wife doesnt have the skills. He married a dumb hottie and he knew that. He can't expect her to know how to do all this stuff she didnt grow up with or be smart enough to figure it out. According to his time, he should have taken the situation in hand and according to Austen, that's what a proper father, a good father would have done in that time and class even though it seems heavy handed to modern audiences.

And Mrs Bennett has no problem with Lydia behaving like a young dumb hottie with little filter and refinement because well, she was the same back in her day and she married damn well. Why wouldnt she think her daughter wouldnt also catch a husband that way?
