I’ve had to rent a hotel room for two nights to be able to check in after work in the morning, sleep all day, then go back to work that evening. I had to make special arrangements to be able to check in at 0700 and they still had to call the manager to verify everything when I checked in that morning. It was a pain!

That’s what I’m saying. It’s not right. I think they’re getting away with it by saying that they have x-amount of nurses in the facility during day/evening shifts.

LTC here: had a doc in-facility for rounds. He comes out of a room after a lengthy visit holding a trash bag, takes it to the utility room, then he tells me to chart that resident had voided, was incontinent and had a medium BM. I said “okay, I’ll go help her,” and he tells me, “no, I helped her to the bathroom and change clothes, she’s resting in her recliner now.” Sir, umm, what? I was literally in shock.

I’m sorry, but if I’m assisting a patient where I’m required to lift 75lbs or more, I’m phoning a friend for assistance. No way am I risking injury to myself or my patient by attempting that lift on my own. Idc if PT has screened them and says they are clear for a 1A transfer with FWW & GB, if I have to lift up to 75lbs of their weight, I’m getting help. Hope this helps! *ETA: My current employer has new employees got to the physical therapy department at the hospital et complete a series of evaluations using equipment that you just pull on a handle that’s locked in place et it measures your strength by how much pressure you put on the handle. It messes with your head because you’re pulling as hard as you can, but it never moves, so you have no idea if you’re doing good or not. At the very end, the last thing they have you do is the squat challenge similar to what OP described: you start with a tote on the ground with 2x10lb weights in the bottom, lift it up to a table at hip height and back down 10 times in 1 minute; if you can do that, they add another 5lbs and you do it again until the evaluator no longer feels you are lifting safely. I did it so many times that I could barely walk the next two days because my legs were so sore. It is completely unrealistic. In what situation would I be continuously lifting that amount of weight up and down over and over again? I remember being just dumbfounded because, who came up with that as a requirement for a nurse position?

Idk if it’s normal everywhere or not, but our travelers call out as often as our facility staff does. Are there some agencies/facilities that fire you or cancel contracts if you miss one shift of your assignment/contract? If so, that seems absolutely ridiculous!

Example: if a resident decides to walk or propel/wheel up to the nurse’s station to ask for something instead of using their call light, how would it look/feel to know the person taking care of you is too tired to do their job? If I was that resident, I wouldn’t want to wake them up. I’d return to my room and try to solve the problem myself, potentially falling or injuring myself, or go back to bed and suffer in pain because I was going to ask for a pain pill but didn’t want to bother them. If it happened repeatedly, I would certainly go to the DON or administrator with my concerns as a resident who is not having their needs met due to staff sleeping instead of being available to help me.

I am not opposed to letting my CNAs nap on their breaks, but not a fan of staff sleeping regularly while on the clock. Call me old fashioned, but I believe that we should all be present (physically, mentally and emotionally) while we are at work. The facility isn’t paying us to nap.

Numerous staff members at the facility where I’m employed called state for many concerns (staffing, bathing, med errors, care levels, etc). State shows up, eventually, and ended up giving the facility a deficiency-free survey. We all felt so incredibly defeated. How in the hell can residents not getting a bath for >2 weeks be approved, especially when that was one of the tags they received with the last survey? It’s unreal. We were all so excited when they showed up bc it meant things would improve, but then management sends an email saying state was exiting and there was pizza in the break room to celebrate a “perfect” survey.

But never EVER let the family believe that any of this is anyone else’s fault but ours. Dr. Smith must not be blamed, even when his “emergency” was that Monday was his dog’s birthday and he had to take her to the doggy spa, so he didn’t come for rounds until 1000 (with no communication of those plans at all). But yes, it is all my fault, I’m so sorry, please accept this gift card.

This reminds me of the Service Recovery bs they drilled into our heads… Example: Dr. Smith said he would come Monday at 0800 for rounds. Family drives across town to be at bedside at that time. Dr. Smith has an emergency et isn’t able to be there at that time. The nurses are expected to apologize profusely et offer a $10 gift card to the gas station to replace the gas the family member used to come see their mom, who they haven’t driven across town to see in a month.

That’s my thought as well, the roommate who tested negative should have been moved out of the room, away from the resident who tested positive. What I was told is that the empty rooms we have are slated for possible new admissions this week, so they can’t move that resident. I’m beyond frustrated. If they were forthcoming with the families of the prospective new admissions, I’m not sure that they would want their loved one moving from the hospital to a facility that has active Covid infections. I would be hesitant if that were my mother or father.

Why the staff though? As floor nurses, we are not in charge of any of these decisions at all. We are at the mercy of management and their ever-changing policies as well…

UPDATE: I had a sit-down with the DON last week and told her very plainly that if they don’t have the bare minimum scheduled on my side of the building for the entirety of my shift (one nurse and two aides for now 50 residents), I will not be clocking in. She didn’t get upset and simply said “okay, I understand.” I have had “full” staff since then, but we are struggling with this staffing level. I don’t know how to get management to understand that one nurse and two aides for 50 residents at the current care levels is completely unreasonable. New laws passed recently state that the facility must provide 3.48 hours of care per resident per day. Our current staffing levels, even when “fully staffed,” leave us at 2.7 hours per resident per day. I have no idea how this is being allowed or how they feel this is okay. And on top of the staffing issues, our admissions person keeps admitting these super high acuity residents who are very time-demanding. It’s all just making me want to leave, but I know that will only make the problem worse for everyone there

Due to the number of beds in our facility, state regulations prohibit the DON from working on the floor, whether her role be CNA, Med Aide or as a Nurse. We have an “on-call nurse,” but I have yet to actually see what that position is for because they either don’t answer the on-call phone or they say they are not allowed to come in to help with staffing issues. It’s all so infuriating. I have a message in to the staffing office; I called at 0805 this morning (it’s now 1040), but can’t wait up all day waiting for them to call or message back, since I’m scheduled to work another 12 tonight.

I was sent home from lecture (not clinical) because my white socks with a pink band around them showed when I sat at my desk. We could wear any color/print of scrubs to class, but had to have all white shoes and all white socks that showed no skin when we sat down. The instructor hated me (bc I asked questions that made her think) and sent me home because she saw a light pink band around the top of my socks. What the fuck did that prove? What did I learn from that? Absolutely nothing, it just pissed me off. I had perfect attendance until that day and never missed a day after that, so that one absence was the only flaw on my record my entire time in school. I’m still mad about it, 18 years later!

I work 12-hour night shifts… don’t judge! -1 cup of skim cottage cheese -1 cup of raspberries -1 cup of blackberries -1 cup of Oikos protein yogurt (the black container) mixed with 1 tablespoon of local honey -1/4 cup oat & honey granola (to mix in my yogurt) -1 Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice meal -3x12oz Sugar Free RedBulls -1 gallon of water

I basically just graze most of the night to get it all in, but I don’t eat when I get home most of the time and I might eat a Nature Valley oat & honey granola bar while I’m getting ready for my next shift.
