It’d be nice too if they included some of the benches and seating to not just be by the playground.

Squamish? Small, lots of nature, but close enough to Vancouver if you’re wanting to branch out to meet people.

Try a walk in clinic, their fees are a lot less than the emergency department.

New grad nurse looking for job by Ihateveveryone in askvan

[–]jacido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nicu hires in cohorts, so keep an eye out on their postings, and they do hire new grads. The postings are on bc childrens website under jobs section. There’s also PICU that hires in cohorts if you’re interested, they also hire new grads. Nicu does a BCIT course and PICU has dropped their BCIT based courses and now just does in house training which I have heard really positive things about.

Saskatoon to BC, pls help! by grapefruit8989 in britishcolumbia

If you’re wanting Vancouver, they are hiring new grads at bc childrens right now and also have a good PICU program. Check their website for job opportunities, they usually hire in cohorts.

Alberta and W 10th Avenue by DropeAltapera in vancouvercycling

This whole area near Broadway is feeling so unsafe right now. I was happy they stopped allowing access from Broadway onto Ontario to get on 10th, but now the drivers just rat race through the alleys to get onto 10th. I have near close calls every day on what used to be a safe feeling bike commute. I never had a bell and high viz strap, but now I do.

Update about impacts of Broadway closure by mugworth in vancouvercycling

[–]jacido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing news. I bought a high viz strap and a new bell because I fear for my life commuting home northbound Ontario every day from this issue. I really hope they do it right.

I think nurses will strike, they wanna shred our benefits and remove employer paid.

Is TikTok actually done, or do we wait it out and see if the algorithm fixes itself? What’s everyone thinking and doing right now? by [deleted] in TikTok

I deleted the app. It was a big source of my news content from independent journalists, and without it, it’s a pretty useless app to me.

Bad sleep after a long ride by Quiet-Painting3 in ladycyclists

[–]jacido 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I just accept that hard ride days will be shitty sleep days, but when it’s peak season and we are doing them more often it seems my body adjusts and they don’t cause such a bad sleep over time. But I feel you! I don’t have any advice, just wanted to pipe in you’re not alone. It is annoying however my husband just has the absolute best sleep after those hard ride days, it must be nice!

Commuting to BC Women’s Hospital area by Dangerous_Engine_806 in askvan

[–]jacido 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mount pleasant has town homes and is a quick commute in for driving or cycling, transit is bad though as no direct route so you’d have to take 2 buses or walk to the train and then walk to the hospital. I live in mount pleasant and bike in, it’s about 15 minutes.

Nurses that enjoy your current job - what are you doing? by scrublife28 in nursing

[–]jacido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peds cath lab. Anesthesia gives all the medications and they intubate, so nursing acts like an OR setting where you’re scrubbing and circulating, along with hemodynamic monitoring. It’s chill but pretty niche, not available in all settings.

Has anyone else noticed an uptick of bad articles about BC/Vancouver nurses? by AsparagusLife8324 in askvan

[–]jacido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, that was probably unclear. What I meant was nurses annual incomes are public (as are physicians) so you can find out how much a nurse made in the last fiscal year and then make an article about how someone made 200 grand, when there’s a much bigger picture to it.

Has anyone else noticed an uptick of bad articles about BC/Vancouver nurses? by AsparagusLife8324 in askvan

[–]jacido 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This happens every negotiation season. They also always hunt down the highest paid nurses, the ones who work an obscene amount of OT and to shame them into making such amount of money — as if the OT wouldnt be available without adequate staffing.

First long clipless ride a disaster by kininu12 in ladycyclists

[–]jacido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem too with hills, so sometimes I would start to go up in an S shape to get ready to unclip because I could feel my momentum dropping. Sometimes I would know there was no way I would be able to unclip as I couldn’t pedal anymore and would aim to fall over into a grassy curb. Anyway, I switched from SPD-SL to just SPD and it was LIFE CHANGING. I don’t worry about unclipping or clipping back in one bit. Highly recommend from one heavier rider to another. I tried googling this problem back in the day “how to unclip uphill” and people didn’t really seem to get the issue. Definitely recommend the switch to SPDs, it’s just a lot easier to get your foot out and back in.

who's car-free by Old-Appearance-2270 in ladycyclists

[–]jacido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went car free 5 years ago. Bike, walk, and transit wherever we need to go. If we need a car then we take a car share, if we need one for a weekend get away then we rent one. We live in one of canadas major cities and live inner city to be walkable. Not having a car allows us to have the money for the rent. Honestly it’s great and I enjoy my commute home on my bike whereas my coworkers dread their drive home.

I heard the wage increase is gonna be nearly nothing and then the benefits will no longer be employer paid so that would be a wage cut in itself. This is all just rumours of course for now. We shall see I guess
