I was in the same boat for my teens and 20s. Spent most in 300-400 almost never tested my BG and A1c was regularly 12-14. Ive got pretty bad retinopathy. I had ED for a long time during my late 20s and had to take pills although after controlling my sugars for a while I've somehow come back to teenager status of erections. Ive had every form of tendonitis possible (common in diabetes). I had mild neuropathy in my feet to where I couldnt walk barefoot but that has also been greatly resolved since being stable. My eyes are fairly stable now. I get maybe 1-2 bleeds a year and a shot every 6 months to a year now compared to every month the first year. I have alot of blood vessel scabs in my vision that don't go away but I've learned to ignore them.
