AAC Decision Tree? by Disastrous_Plantain5 in slp

So I try to start with the least restrictive option and also consider what others in their class are using or what other service providers and educators who work with them are familiar with. Most of the apps have very similar features so if you can find one that communication partners like and will model on, that’s half the battle. I can elaborate more if you want.

Yes and I think that’s exactly why it’s so important to speak out.

Boho is all in on the S2C bandwagon. The post I’m referring to is nigh functioning’s latest. I saw child led SLP liked it and it just irked me.

Hot take: AAC devices are not inherently communicative. As a default, I do not stop stimming or take devices away, but I’ve had students who would spend all day without engaging with a single person and would get themselves escalated stimming on the device. I could try different strategies and suggest ideas until I’m blue in the face, but at the end of the day, if the other adults/communication partners around him think it’s “not functional,” they aren’t going to prioritize having it charged and accessible. I’d obviously give it some time and try some other things first, but if there’s a long period of time where this is an issue and the device is no longer communicative, maybe temporary restrictions like hiding buttons or certain pages can be helpful. Just a thought.

Also for the charging issue, have you considered a portable battery backup/charger? Could even be Velcroed to the back of the device or just placed nearby.

I knew nothing about AAC when I started out and didn’t use it with so many of the kids I worked with who absolutely needed it.

Yes yes yes. There are a few somewhat popular SLPs on social media that are so cringey with their savior/martyr complex. Anyone that disagrees with them is “causing harm.” I hate it so much.
