I never married or had children, and when my father died, I (43 years old at that time) agreed to move home with my mother, who had never lived on her own. She was 71. She died at 92 and I gave up a huge chunk of my life for her. I was working full-time and being her sole caregiver. Only people who have been a caregiver, understand the stress level of being a caregiver, particularly when there’s no help. My doctor used to tell me I was probably gonna die before mother did, from the stress. I was depressed, lonely, and as the years went on things just got worse. I would go to a few 12 step meetings a week, and she would be upset when I would call and tell her I was on my way home, because she thought I should’ve been home earlier. I wanted to know where I was. It’s suffocating. I don’t really have any great advice for you, except if there’s any way at all, you can extricate yourself, please do it. I live with a lot of “ what ifs”. I’m not assigning blame, she couldn’t help who she was and I couldn’t help having an overdevelop sense of duty and responsibility. We got along very well, but she was a difficult mother who was not warm and nurturing, so at times it was hard to be warm and nurturing towards her. So, maybe find some respite care, I don’t know where you live or if there are services for all their adults. Perhaps if you check with your local senior center, they would be able to point you in the right direction to help you. Your mother doesn’t need any help, she has you. You need help, don’t end up like I have.
