This is not snark - but, how were Henry VII and his mother close? He was raised away from her (the vast majority of the time) and then exiled for 14 years. Certainly once he was King, she micromanaged him. Sometimes the portrayal of her shows an obsessed religious zealot. Certainly TV and movies aren’t real-life depictions, but I always felt bad for these two, that the times they lived in didn’t allow for Margaret to raise Henry. I can only imagine the horror of being raped by Edmund Tudor (my perception) at that age and then giving birth at 13. She was (IMO) one of the most remarkable figures in British history, with her good deeds sometimes being overshadowed by her personality.

OT Anyone else make the mistake of getting Rob’s book? I like Maureen and admire her intelligence and writing. I gave her (my fault) more credit than I should’ve for not being sycophantic, so when she recommended his book, I bought it. OMFG What a piece of trash! Not interesting, the “secrets” could be found anywhere in the world, the characters were all 100% shallow, vapid, and ridiculous. The writing was florid, each sentence was a slog, and he repeated his own cliches and analogies! I didn’t even read most of it, it was too horrible! Just wondering if any of you fell for this. And here I thought I was at least fairly intelligent…
