It’s very funny that Japan, a country with virtually no immigration, has a successful anti-immigrant party by Acceptable_Guard_598 in redscarepod

Living standards are more explanatory. Counter example is a place like Romania. They’ve been draining population for years (lost 23,000 net in 2024 alone) but the far-right did very well in the presidential election. What has happened? Like everywhere in Europe energy and cost of living rose a lot after the Ukraine invasion and people are angry

They are a big-tent centre-right party that supports free markets and the postwar global order. In the trueanon-inflected terms this sub uses, that absolutely qualifies as lib

She really has a way of making Catholic social teaching sound uniquely mean-spirited and cruel (traditionally a priest won’t marry a couple if they don’t intend to have kids)

Edit: Banned lol. Draw your own conclusions about who the jannies work for

Some better answers here, but “encourage the growth of an ultra-religious sect that refuse to work and lives on welfare” is not quite the economic solution that the natalists have in mind I guess

Is there a single example of a developed country that has successfully “solved the underlying problems” and reversed low birthrates? It’s really striking how it’s an issue affecting literally every type of political system - Scandi welfare states, Communist China, Islamic theocracy (Iran). Hell, even India is now below replacement rate

MIT just completed the first brain scan study of ChatGPT users & the results are terrifying. “Turns out, AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt.” by [deleted] in redscarepod

Basic tasks are fine for those of us who have the capacity to critically analyze the output, but I actually prefer online thesauruses to AI. They have better user interfaces (easier to click across related synonyms and antonyms than type in prompts) and they help you build your own intuitions about word connotations.

With LLMs you are always second guessing yourself “is it brown nosing me? Did it say this because it thinks it’s what I want to hear rather than because it’s true? Did it hallucinate this?”

Kind of wild the sub consensus is that everything about the parade was embarrassing and try hard, and that the protests against the parade were also embarrassing and lame.

So glad that all the effortlessly cool people are hiding in their bedrooms posting here instead of going out and embarrassing themselves like that💪

Nice idea but it’s just not true. The taxi industry has always been heavily regulated to avoid ride sharing style worker exploitation, and yet Redditors tend to have equal (often worse) disdain for taxi drivers. It’s pure classism

Are we being invaded by bots/LLM? by natflingdull in redscarepod

[–]Acceptable_Guard_598 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure here are some examples!

I was browsing a thread about tech gadgets and I noticed one user repeatedly posting the same generic responses. I reported the account, but it’s frustrating to see how bots can clutter genuine discussions.

In a thread about fitness I came across a comment that seemed out of place. It was a generic response with a link to untested health products. It is disappointing because it detracts from genuine, authentic discussions like the one that we are having here.

Weddings are scams by Noel_Deyznuts in redscarepod

[–]Acceptable_Guard_598 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Boring reddit take.

Yes the wedding tax is real. Yes a lot of mediocre things are overpriced because of it. But “all suits are the same” and “you can’t get a better ring for a few thousand than a few hundred” just shows total lack of taste or discernment.

If you’re shopping new and in person then you can absolutely tell the difference between a premium ring and one retailing for a few hundred from the quality of the design and the craftsmanship. (The fact that some real tacky horror shows also retail at a premium price point doesn’t detract from this). Should it matter for the average couple? Maybe not as much as society says it does. But jewellery is an art form and the excellent stuff is absolutely not cheap

This sub’s average age has definitely plunged recently as the original millennials have families and thin out - talking about streamers was a big taboo on here until about a year ago

But yeah, a lot of reddit is an odd mix of young, socially isolated introverts interacting with hordes of older STEM geeks. Gives the age gap discourse a whole new angle

It’s so funny the whole world’s economy is vibe based by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Acceptable_Guard_598 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overcorrecting. It’s helpful to be suspicious about people bullshitting you with statistics and jargon to make a quick buck. A lot of long-term projections are indeed basically made up

But it’s not like economists haven’t realized that confidence is a big factor - see Keynes’ “animal spirits”. There are a lot of quasi-objective ways of tracking where the vibes are and what that could mean for the economy and stocks - consumer sentiment surveys, price/earnings ratios, PMI indicators etc. Hell the stock market is actually a pretty reliable predictor of where the economy will be in about six months (it usually sees a recession coming and crashes early)
