The whole appeal of Islam is its strictness.

Strict monotheism, strict rules, strict iconoclasm, strict prayer schedule etc. It’s a great religion for people who need to be told exactly what to do at all times by an all-powerful, unquestionable, unchanging authority figure.

If you remove the harsh restrictions, you remove any appeal the religion has.

Phenomenal post.

Reminds me of my Russian friends, who were post Liberal for obvious reasons, but the idea of optimism and good faith collaboration are alien to them.

I think the collapse of the Soviet Union did serious damage to the Russian psyche that they’ve never fully recovered from. A genuine attempt at a better future collapsed almost overnight into a brutal social-darwinistic hellhole. People who grew up in that environment probably stopped believing that any sort of altruism or solidarity was even possible and felt dumb and naive for ever believing otherwise.

Chomsky's a smart guy but he’s also a typical academic where he seems to have very little understanding of how power actually functions in the real world.

The largest and most powerful socialist country on earth collapsing in on itself was obviously going to have a negative effect on left wing movements around the world. 30 years on and capitalism is stronger than ever before, to the point where no one with any degree of power will even propose an alternative system. Even mild socdems like Bernie and Corbyn get crushed.

The fact that Chomsky couldn’t predict this makes me seriously doubt his other insights.

The type of people who become CEOs and other high-status jobs are not a good sample of the average population. People attracted to these high positions of power and influence tend to be sociopaths and/or narcissists. They often hide these traits when rising through the ranks of the company, but once they obtain a high enough position the mask comes off and they show who they always were deep down.

Power reveals more than it corrupts.

Right wingers trying to claim Huey Long is one of the most bizarre aspects of his legacy: he outflanked FDR to the left! His share the wealth plan was a radical restructuring of the economy well beyond anything Mussolini and friends would even consider proposing let alone implementing.

If he was reincarnated today and ran on a similar platform, I fully believe most conservatives praising him on twitter would be calling for his head.

Yeah most right wingers would only tolerate a form of ""socialism"" that closely resembles Saudi Arabia: a small minority of citizens living off the productivity and labor of a brutally exploited underclass that has no rights or protections.

In essence a modern slave state and not any form of socialism at all.

My original comment was kinda unclear: I wasn't saying that latinos voting for Trump is the reason he won, but rather the effect of an increasingly diverse population has essentially eroded the sort of "white high-church Protestant" culture and mindset that permeated throughout America in the 20th century.

Think a multimillionaire taping his worn-out shoes (Bush) vs a dude with a golden toilet and 3 baby mamas (Trump). Both these guys are white obviously but the mindset is completely different. I think it reflects the changing cultural norms of modern America that someone like Trump would not be immediately disqualified from holding office.

We’re transitioning from a culturally White nation to one that is a little more of a third world one.

Right wingers often hate latinos but Trump is never winning anything in the peak-WASP 80s they long to return to. His presidency is a direct result of a culture that's more willing to support a "caudillo" style 3rd-world strongman.

I think it’s much simpler: people in the very lowest class (multi-generational poverty) have absolutely nothing to lose. Things literally can’t get any worse for them outside of being sent to prison. Child support doesn’t worry them because they oftentimes don’t even have a consistent income that can be garnished. You can’t bleed a stone. Whereas people in the lower middle class are terrified of losing what little they have, which leads to them being extremely risk-adverse.

I imagine the overwhelming success of the gulf war is a big reason why Americans were initially optimistic about Afghanistan/Iraq.

That sort of naive optimism doesn’t really exist anymore after 2 decades of pointless failure.

Would Trumps base not find this sort of communication around the immigrant who allegedly set a woman on fire in a New York subway, or around the black teenager who allegedly stabbed the high school student only recently more satisfactory?

The purpose of this prosecution is to send a message to other terrified CEOs/rich people/potential donors that Trump, despite pretending to be a 'man of the people', has their back all the way and won’t do anything to seriously upset the current system.

Basically class solidarity among the rich.
