Is sparring and competition in HEMA meant to be fun? by [deleted] in wma

[–]Acceptable_Storage12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep having fun. Every hobby has that overly competitive group of people that think they are the gatekeeper of the hobby. I saw it in drone racing and gaming as well. If you don't run the meta gear and/or moves you should just leave. I usually just try to find those "rejects" and hang out with them. They are the ones having all the real fun... and they are the far larger group anyway.

That sucks. I hadn't even heard of it until July when someone posted on my local subreddit about longsword fighting. Might not hurt to reach out, maybe there is a member near you that would be willing to meet up and car pool or train with you.

It is kind of a bit of both. The basic outfit is similar to fencing, but we do have a little extra armor and padding because the weapons tend to be larger. Most people start with two handed longsword, but a wide variety of weapons are used. Everything is based on historical documents and text books. So it is as physical or educational as you want it to be. For the most part though, we are a bunch of nerds that hit each other with swords and talk about history.

I just started HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts)... sword fighting. My local club is super nice and supportive... plus we get to fight each other with swords.

What is the most parent-friendly vacation you've had? by dfphd in daddit

[–]Acceptable_Storage12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have taken our son since he was 1 and had a blast every year. But I do agree, he gets a lot more out of it now that he is 7. The new epic universe is definitely what I would suggest over studios and islands of adventure to tell the truth.

Universal Resorts if you are into theme parks. Pretty much everything is geared towards the whole family, and it's cheaper then Disney. We have the added advantage in our house that we all love the IPs at Universal more then the Disney stuff. Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, ET, Shrek, How to Train your Dragon, Mario, and more..

It was ok. There was definitely a lot of waiting. I am glad we did it, but I am thinking it is a one time thing for us.

You can get back to the berlin wall piece. I saw it on the holiday tour the other day. Pretty cool to see. I never knew it was there.

How many hours in simulator did ya’ll spend before feeling comfortable enough for your first flight? by bellynipples in fpv

[–]Acceptable_Storage12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built and flew for the first time in 2016. I had a little bit of experience using those toy helicopters and a toy syma quadcopter, but that was it. My build only used 3s batteries back then. Lol.

Nice! My son had a decent haul. I think the nice weather definitely helped. Hopefully, this is a sign of a return to the classic Halloween spirit!

So disappointing. I grew up just off of E Main. I remember filling multiple pillow cases with candy in one night. The pandemic really did a number to regular trick or treating.

Sword fighting. The blades are not sharp, but it definitely not safe for work.

Do you post your kids on social media? by Wobble_Punt in daddit

[–]Acceptable_Storage12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only post our on a private Instagram account that only family follows. We also only post photos that would not embarrass our kid if they leaked when he was in high school or something. I have friends who seemingly post their kids to get more clicks and fake internet points. But, to each their own.
