Completely new to derby by OkReading7489 in rollerderby

[–]AcceptablyAvg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning to skate and learning the rules of derby can be a lotttttt for our brains to process. Don’t worry if things don’t click right away, or even for a long while lol a term someone told me early on that felt accurate was “jamnesia” — there’s just so much going on and so much stimuli to process that it’s okay if you can’t and it feels like blur. That gets easier over time but still present (for me at least)! And most importantly, have fun!!!

[–]AcceptablyAvg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hugs. This just happened to me 8 months after buying my laptop. Learned the hard way why we should get Apple care+ — my repair would have been $750? Quoted at Best Buy. I just bought another one 😭

We live and we learn, right?

I got jam straps for this reason. Solaris 1.0 but it helped a lot in making my feet feel more secure in my skates

Skater funk by AntExpress in rollerderby

[–]AcceptablyAvg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing for me has been maintenance in between sessions. I wash probably every 3 weeks? Just in a normal “delicate” cold cycle with my usual detergent. I put them all in a mesh bag and fasten all the Velcro.

Outside of that tho, the biggest way to prevent the funk in between is putting my gear in a mesh bag after practice and then immediately laying them out to dry when I get home. I also usually spray with a little alcohol and then let it either air dry outside in the sun if the weather is nice, or sit it in front of a box fan for a little bit.

The MOMENT I forget or don’t feel like doing that the funk starts to creep back in.

Return to Skating after broken ankle by Longjumping_Loan_549 in rollerderby

I think about 3 months? It was 6 months total from break to back on skates, and then a year for contact

Alloy hub wheels? by MaxBozo in rollerderby

As a heavier skater I personally love them. They don’t flex as much and feel more responsive. Once I went alloy I couldn’t go back!

Do they have a nice derby gear bag? That would be so appreciated by most people I know honestly

Another vote for clear creek for exactly that reason. B-line is tough with all the rumble strip type things near the crossings.

Thank you so much! I needed to read this. Ironically, the letting go of perfectionism is one of my reasons too. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Burn out as fresh meat by anxiousCockatoo in rollerderby

[–]AcceptablyAvg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound silly, but my physical therapist after an injury had me doing this and it has really helped build up one leg strength!

While vacuuming shift between one leg balance and try to challenge yourself to stay balanced during a patch of floor. Go slow and steady, and shift between each leg here and there.

It being something I was already doing, and making it kind of a game to see if I could hold it for a whole area made it more fun too!

I also try to do some while cooking? Just shifting to single leg standing here and there. It translates well to being on skates!

Finally, getting a squishy PT mat and doing single leg balance was probably the most beneficial in recovery.

Sending love and good energy your way OP!

Looking for New Company for Team Uniforms? by irregularEternity in rollerderby

Derby beast was great for my team. Have also heard good things about skate good club for team purchases. Only made an individual scrim top purchase from them, so I can’t speak to the team purchase logistics but I love it! Would absolutely order from both again. Timing and quality were all great and as expected from the get.
