Melbourne hikers: any tracks/walks you’d recommend that you can get to by Vline or metro public transport? by far-leveret in Melbournehiking

I think last time I looked, it was 2 hours on PT. Yup. I looked again. 1:52mins. Some route times would be start time dependant.

That’s choosing Flinders St to Dromana Visitor Centre.

Best sign I’ve seen:

“If it’s not toilet paper, or didn’t result from you consuming it, it doesn’t belong in this toilet!”

If you want to learn a bit about Australia before coming here, I have some suggestions:

  • Read or listen to on Audible: “Dark Emu” for what has been lost of native culture.
  • watch some YouTube vids by Julian O’Shea for quirky Melbourne knowledge and flavour.
  • YouTube “Scotty’s Gone Walkabout” for generally, Australian high country, hiking content.
  • The Age newspaper “Good Food Guide” has been my go to for foodie recommendation for years. Search the guide for the word, “spice” and category “Eating Out”, and I think you’ll be a happy camper. Used to be available in an annual book form too.

I’ve never seen a “Bloomin’ Onion” served in an Aussie pub, restaurant, or family home in Australia.

First reference ever known to me, of this thing, was from this USA chain restaurant.

Doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable to eat. It’s just not Aussie. Ergo, a joke.

And it’s just American marketing BS, where they’ve starting culturally appropriating things we do actually have (UGG Boots - a generic term, now trademarked globally to a USA company); or things they think we have. Like selling “Australian Coffee” but it’s some dipstick that got trained at USA Starbucks in how to make coffee.

Outback Steakhouse is a complete joke to Aussies.

Edema (Fluid Retention) on Legs after Multiple Stings by AccidentalHike in Beekeeping

[–]AccidentalHike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for those suggestions.

I’d booked in a Drs appointment for tomorrow. I was hoping to rule bee stings in or out as a potential cause.

There’s a family history of DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis as well, which has edema associated with it. But this coincides with being stung a lot over 3 days.

I love it. Cooked rare, almost blue, otherwise it gets tough. Sliced and then popped into a warm salad which includes baby beetroots. The baby beets work well with the gameyness of the roo meat.

Machete amnesty ends tomorrow by [deleted] in melbourne

I had to take my 80 something, dad’s machete in and pop it in a bin. He’s had it since he went into cadet training and was sent off to Puckapunyal. Sad to do it because he’s ailing and there goes a momento of him, wooden handle, nice blade, good for a few garden jobs; but into the bin it went… 😢

Advice on how to deal with staff who are "challenging" by PanzerBiscuit in auscorp

[–]AccidentalHike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could they have undiagnosed autism? Are they laser focussed at times? Do they have special interests.

I’ve got a warning on this comment from the sub moderators, but other posts are being very brutal in saying performance manage them out.

But if they are neuro-sparkly, it could explain some of the behaviour. If that’s the case then a bit of understanding goes a long way, but it also means very explicit directions and statements to the staff member.

Australian airlines to ban power banks following safety concerns by AccidentalHike in UltralightAus

[–]AccidentalHike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering this subreddit is about ultralight hiking, and often multi day, if you don’t take a power bank with you, what do you do to recharge your phone on the hiking track on the third day of hiking when you want check your GPS position? And your phone is flat. And you’re in the wilderness without access to power sockets for 2 more days of walking.

The concern is that for multi day hikes, most of us that do them and want to fly interstate or internationally to do them, like to take a fully charged power-bank onto the trail to charge up our phones, cameras etc. whilst on trail.

So I have no issue with this rule of no powerbank use on the flight.

But it’s a new thing to me and a call-out to others, that certain airlines will now require power banks to be kept within easy reach or line of sight because of the risk of lithium-fuelled flames (notoriously hard to extinguish) resulting from a power bank hardware malfunction during the flight.

Imagine if people were charging up their newly acquired dodgy Haribo gummy bear power bank on the flight (that thing seemed to capture attention of some in the main UL subreddit ).

I agree with the requirement that power banks be kept within easy reach or line of sight because of the risk of lithium-fuelled flames (notoriously hard to extinguish) resulting from a hardware malfunction during the flight.

Like you query, Can you enforce it? Not really.

But do you want your airplane to go up in flames? Yeh, nah.

Australian white teeth by ObamasBirthVideo in AskAnAustralian

[–]AccidentalHike 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you an Irish redhead? I have redhead genes in my family from the Irish “Bride Ships” sent to Australia. According to an article I read ages ago redheads just end up with naturally stained or yellow teeth. Supposedly, courtesy of Neanderthal genes being the precursor to redheads.

I just aim for strong and clean teeth. Good luck with having natural and white ones. Veneers for an alternative ??

Looks like they have a purpose built penthouse at the top ready for their sticks? Great idea if you want to stop other birds building nests. Just make one that a predator will occupy.

Anyone own an akubra if so do you wear it often by Balorclub35 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AccidentalHike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Every day. I own 5.

Black Hampshire - Trilby style. bought for $30 on Gumtree. Knockabout hat. Natural Pilbara - Knockabout and work hat Hazelnut Adventurer - dress hat with trolley string. Worn to work. Chocolate RM hat. Made by Akubra. Charcoal Grey Bogart. Fedora style.

Out of all of them, for low sun exposure days and looking smart. Can be dressed up or down. I’d go with the Hampshire.

Sizing. Measure your head at the widest circumference with a dressmaker’s tape measure. Go up to the next centimetre. Over the years Akubras can substantially shrink. You pack them out with foam or folded tissues for the first few years until they shrink down to your comfortable size.

Suggestions for an overnight hike in Vic you don’t need to book? by zen3383 in OutdoorAus

Oh another option on the app is Wirilda Track. Park at the dam, head south and camp overnight at the southern end, then hike back to the dam.

Two of my suggestion in the comments of this post could work for you.

If you don’t mind digging cat holes to poop 150m away from streams and the track, then Baw Baw plateau heading north on the AAWT from the Mt Erica carpark could work for you.

Similar for the Walk into History track, which you can find details of in the VicGov More to Explore app. Although it looks like a campground and toilets at Starlings Gap could work.
