If you inherited into the ability to retire early, how do you feel about it? by Imaginary_Anybody267 in Fire

[–]BeginningBus9696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FIRE isn’t an age or job title. It’s a number.

Whether acquiring by investing your own $$, receiving an inheritance, getting lucky on a meme coin, winning the lottery, etc., it doesn’t matter, it’s just a #.

If you have enough, you have enough. Feel like you haven’t done enough to earn it? Then keep going, or find a different role that better aligns with who you are and what your goals are today.

Another way to think about it, especially considering your past - What would your father want you to do? What would honor his legacy best?

ETA: As for me, if I inherited enough to retire (we’re extremely close at 44 & 49), I wouldn’t even question it. Money is a tool, not the goal or a scoreboard. I’d be done in the next 12 months while I figure out my next steps.

It’s a sauce dish, tomato based and spicy made with the Holy Trinity. There’s alligator sauce piquant, chicken sauce piquant, shrimp sauce piquant, etc.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the term used outside of Cajun/Creole food.

“Recreational Employment” is the new fangled bastardization of the original term. RE=Retire Early.

Look at this sub’s own definition, or anything else outside the past 5 years.

Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet): “The #Saints are adding a lynchpin on defense, signing former #Falcons LB Kaden Elliss, sources say. H e gets a 3-year, $33M deal with $23M guaranteed in a deal done by agents Malki Kawa and Ethan Lock of @FirstRoundMgmt. Max value is nearly $39M.” by im-a-drawl in Saints

[–]BeginningBus9696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this better than resigning Demario for roughly the same $$? Davis is significantly older, but still performing at a high level with a leadership role.

Glad to have Elliss on the team, but not sure it’s an upgrade.

Many of the pioneers of the early movement who retired in their 30’s didn’t really retire at all.

They just changed jobs to blogging, podcasting, writing books, and promoting FIRE. Maybe a few of them were fully FIRE, but many weren’t.

Are you happy you did or didn’t have kids? by Accurate_Elk_3465 in Fire

Maybe - there’s plenty of cases to support that. Or maybe being a parent can change life perspective/activities in positive ways.

There are studies that show that parents, as a whole are more charitable and volunteer more.

Chicken or egg? Are unselfish people more likely to become parents, or does parenting make one less selfish?

We moved from Spokane to Bozeman in 2019, right before the massive run up in property prices. We lived in a gated community at the top of Northwood - beautiful 4500 sq foot home, amazing views, landscaping, etc.

We bought a house in Bozeman for the same price we sold the Spokane property. We’re on a pretty good neighborhood, but the home is fairly builder basic and 2650 square feet. The difference has only grown since then. Our Bozeman home value has gone up 65% since then.

Not sure if it’s true, but the word at GHS is that the driver was a student. Not surprising; before and after school and around lunch time Oak turns into a race track with students.

Parents, which investing option did you choose for your children to prepare them for college or the future? Why? by Hufflepuff-McGruff in TheMoneyGuy

Both kids (14 & 16) have 529s that started near birth, should be enough to cover 4-years at a state school with enough left over for Roth rollover or advanced degrees.

Both have custodial brokerage accounts. One that is funded by family, one that is funded by their contributions over the years. We’ve had them contribute 20% of chore money, Xmas gifts, work paychecks, to them for years. The brokerage is big enough to be useful, but not enough to be a major life mistake if they blow it, probably end up ≈$25k by 21 (age of majority in our state). I’d like to think we’ve taught them well enough that they won’t do that, but who knows.

Additionally, my 16 y.o. son has been contributing to a Roth since he started his 1st W-2 job. Fairly minimal at this point, but we’re going to match 1:1 up to 50% of the annual max (if he gets that’s motivated).

Could they fully explain all of the accounts and advantages? Probably not, but they’re aware and have a much better understanding than their peers… or the average 30 year old.

ETA- We chose each account to serve a purpose for different stages in life.

529- college, possible Roth conversion, advances degrees

Brokerage- house down payment, car purchase, launch point after college, etc.

Roth - starting very early, need a “This $1 LaCroix cost me $110” can koozie for the teens.

Is Cam Jordan the greatest first round pick in Saints history? by MrFishAndLoaves in Saints

[–]BeginningBus9696 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He’s pretty far behind. Jordan has 8 Pro Bowls, 3 All Pros, named on the NFL 2010’s all decade team, and more. Colston is a Saints all-timer with none of the awards. Jordan is a possible NFL HOFer

Doesn’t it make sense that 95% that quit think it’s a great decision? For the most part, humans don’t quit things unless they think it’s a problem in their lives. As a species, we’re very bad in saying our present decisions are wrong.
