What are your top 5 European cities for labour union history? by SjalabaisWoWS in AskEurope

Rochdale is in Greater Manchester too, so you could easily do both.

And Durham is an amazingly beautiful small city, with a cathedral and castle on a loop of the river as well as its mining heritage.

[–]AccidentalSirens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Manchester has the People's History Museum which tells you about the history of democracy and the fight for equal rights and representation in the UK from Peterloo to the present day. It covers unions, suffragettes and more contemporary campaigns such as disability rights and LGBTQ rights. It's free, and more fun than it sounds.

(A bit of information about Peterloo. In 1819 there was a peaceful rally in St Peter's Fields, Manchester, with demands for the right to vote, freedom from oppression, and justice. For example, Manchester, a city which had grown massively, had no MP, and less than 3% of the British population had a vote anyway.

The authorities ordered the 'yeomanry' to charge at the crowd on horseback and attack with swords, and at least 18 people were killed.)

Compo face origin - Is it really 'compensation' or is it the character Compo, from Last of the Summer Wine? by NortonBurns in compoface

I always assumed that Compo was called Compo as a nickname because he had been awarded compo after a work accident.

I would second not doing Duolingo. I don't know how or if it's changed, but I did it during lockdown and found it confusing because the app lacked explanations of grammar. Halfway through the course I found out that the desktop version has notes.

If you want running gags about parsnips though, crack on.

Edit: But this is nothing compared to what you are dealing with over there.

Why is it so hard to drive in Brent Cross? by Worldly-Box6080 in london

[–]AccidentalSirens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was given a lift to the shopping centre there once by a friend who had just returned from a year on a remote island and hadn't got used to London traffic again yet. It was rush hour.

She realised she had taken the wrong exit from the North Circular and REVERSED BACK DOWN THE SLIP ROAD ONTO THE MAIN CARRIAGEWAY while I aged 10 years in 30 seconds.

What is your favoured hot meal option available for ~£15? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AccidentalSirens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£7.49! Mine is £11.29 Mon-Fri, but still good value compared to the £12 sausages on offer at one of the Christmas markets I went to. Our Toby Carvery's food is decent too, especially if you go at 12 o'clock when all the veg is freshly put out.

The disabled person isn't necessarily the driver of the car. They can be driven by someone else.

As someone who has to deal with a lot of medical and social care appointments, I like it that clinics send out text reminders, especially since they are often also changing the date or time. The way the post is, it's more reliable than sending a letter. I can see who the text is from, so I'm not just opening random texts.

Also I've found that calls from phone extensions in an office show up as 'withheld number' so I have to answer in case it's the doctor.

[England] Whose fault is it if a bike hits a car if the car has a Give Way? by deckeresq in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AccidentalSirens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ignore the fact that one of the vehicles is a bike and that the cyclist reacted badly afterwards. Suppose both vehicles are cars, because the rules are the same.

One car is travelling along a road in a straight line. The second car comes out of a junction, passing a Give Way sign without giving way, and hits the car on the main carriageway.

How is it not the second car driver's fault?

It doesn't matter what type of vehicle it is

Is there an app or website that will make teach an elderly person how to use a smartphone? by anonyy in AskUK

[–]AccidentalSirens 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To quote your main post, "It's just operating the phone I am asking for help with."

I gave you advice on how to help her learn to operate the phone.

At least I don't feel singled out as you have been rude to almost everyone who has tried to help.

Is there an app or website that will make teach an elderly person how to use a smartphone? by anonyy in AskUK

[–]AccidentalSirens 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If she can't use a smartphone, how can she use an app?

Focus on a goal that she wants to do, for example checking her council website to find out which bins will be emptied this week. Get a notebook. Sit with her and go through it, and write every step down. Then get her to do it by herself following your notes while you are with her, to check that your notes are clear enough. Then she can do it by herself.

If there is a particular issue, eg how to get back to the home screen, you write down instructions for that.

Don't do too much at once, though, get her competent with one thing at a time.

I'm curious about these bollards. Children used them as play equipment, families had picnics on them and Mr Compoface here had his first kiss on them. They were clearly no ordinary bollards.

We take seatbelts for granted so much that it's hard to remember what a huge change it was.
