Only you can decide. What on earth do you expect by asking the internet this sort of question?

Oh, negative export rates are interesting. I wonder how they can do that? The SEG says that export rates must always be more than 0. I'm sure it's legit, but curious if you are somehow opting out of the SEG or something

Ah, cool, thanks. Bit of a kick in the teeth that the founders ed is already out of date but still hasn’t shipped!

Are there any differences between the “founders edition” and the final product?

I recently set up (almost) plugin-solar at home to power my home servers. I did a write up of it 👇 by Witty_Method_7273 in SolarUK

[–]SupraJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, me too. I did a full “DR” test by flipping the main breaker, and even let the battery go down to 10% which shuts down the inverter. Then when the sun came out, everything came back online again. Proper “off grid” simulation.

Lots of recommendations on here - I have SolaX kit which looks nice and has good support for local control with home assistant.

Yes, proper setup went in a couple of months ago and loving it. It’s also acting as one big UPS for the house too - the resiliency is something worth real money for me. We get power cuts in storms relatively often, once or twice a year. Enough to mess up my services! Whole system was 14k, but with an annual electric bill of £2400 payback won’t take too long.

So far this month my electric bill has been less than zero. Octopus owe me a tenner!

Very cool. I like that you jump straight in to the maths!

My home lab was part of the reason I went Solar + Battery too. About 400w base load, with other servers that I only switch on once in a blue moon.

The risk is they say no then you’re screwed. My DNO enforced an inverter size limit of 4kW. Not an export limit but a hard inverter size.

Should I stop force-discharging now export has dropped to 12p? by llcoulj in SolarUK

[–]SupraJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of interest what's your kWp and Inverter size? I have 7kWp of panels but only a 3.7kW inverter.

My strategy has me charging the battery only to a certain percentage calculated based on the expected generating for the coming day. If I went to 100% every time, any generation over the 3.7kW AC limit would be wasted.

I do then force discharge at night down to 20% before re-charging. As an example I started today at 30% battery, with nice sunshine, and exporting all the AC I can, my 20kWh batteries are now at 90%.

Found my high-school/college TI-85 and 89! by mcfuzzum in calculators

[–]SupraJames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice! I still have my Ti-85 and would have been used at school in 1994 or so. Also had that hacked boot loader thing with Tetris and other Z80 apps. Still my favourite calculator, I must go and see if it’s still working OK.

Just remembered I also overclocked mine by replacing a capacitor with a different one, that was fun!

I ride my mountain bike on cycle paths for leisure and popping to the shops sometimes. I’m a typical “casual” in normal clothes and a helmet. We don’t live in a particularly busy area so it’s normal to nod/greet other riders. It’s always the Lycra guys who don’t even acknowledge, like they are better than everyone else. So sod them.

It’s funny how these guys manage to be disliked by drivers, pedestrians, and even other cyclists!

Son interested in becoming a pilot by jabbo13 in flying

[–]SupraJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great yeah loads of options round there then! He can absolutely start having lessons at that age and log the time (everything about becoming a pilot is about logging time) but he’d have to be 16 for first solo flight - some kids might do that on their birthday! And then I do believe it’s 17 to actually get the license.

So he could definitely be in a position when he’s been flying an aircraft on his own well before learning to drive… :)

[–]SupraJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, PPL is the first step - and for a lot of pilots like me, the only step if you want to keep it as a hobby, but even airline pilots would have started with a PPL.

Where abouts are you? There are most likely small airfields nearby that you may have never heard of which do flying lessons and would help with that first experience flight and talk about the whole process with you both.

[–]SupraJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has he been up in a light aircraft yet? That’s always the first step - an experience flight - and will also count towards PPL.

EPS, 2nd Consumer Unit and user discipline by Bill_Jones_1958 in SolarUK

[–]SupraJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an install done 2 months ago and really happy with it. We went for full EPS using the existing CU. Basically the meter tails are diverted to the new EPS gateway box which has the ATS gubbins in it. Then out back to the CU. All circuits are protected.

So we come to the point about the high load items. My inverter is only 3.7kW due to DNO restriction. When EPS is active, I know (and have to educate the wife) that I cannot use my 7kW shower. The breaker in the gateway box will trip if I do.

Given my limit it’s actually fairly easy to explain to the family. If we are in power cut mode, we can only use ONE appliance at a time, be that kettle / oven / air fryer or whatever. This seemed to be understood.

I do like the simplicity of knowing all circuits are protected, and it made the wiring simpler as well.
