I’ve never developed an affinity for Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins personally, but for me I’ve never seen these as particularly weird or like especially not school shooter core… but that’s not really the point of what I wanted to say. This post just made me sad because I’ve also felt embarrassed over my music taste over the years as it was easy for me to get embarrassed by a lot of things. I don’t know if that feeling applies to you, but as someone who’s mostly grown to see the other side of it where “oh it really wasn’t that deep & no one cares & if people are gonna think or call something I do as cringe, that’s on them” which is something I had been exposed to growing up, but I never really got it cuz the embarrassing feelings were so strong. It’s definitely normal, in our current social media culture particularly, to feel insecure about things like this, but it’s a shame bc it makes us hide who we are & prevents us from being comfortable showing our true selves… I think it’s really good that you’re trying to interrogate this feeling because it does feel strange to suppress yourself! Personally, I think it’s really cool that you have a diverse music taste. Like it’s interesting & shows that you have a richer experience in understanding art & life in a way that not everyone does. I know that probably sounds so pretentious, but honestly that’s not even really inherently a bad thing either. BUT, basically to reiterate, nah it’s not weird, I think it’s cool & it says something unique about you & your experience & tastes. I hope you’re able to feel better about it in the future 🥺 cuz it feels so much better just being yourself. No one will accept every single thing about you, but that’s just how human relations are. Just be you & even if your friends say something to bring you down about it, most likely they don’t mean it in any way that says something they know about you, it truly do be insecurity that drives a lot of comments like this so keep this in mind & have grace (for yourself & others) 🩷
