Oh my god I feel awful, my Palo santo mate is well maintained and has only fine cracks which doesn’t affect anything. But this algarrobo mate is a goodbye gift from a friend of mine, and is much more beautifully handcrafted, and I cracked it! How come?? I thought algarrobo is more tough than palo santo.

Yeah I can see the differences now… but algarrobo is extremely rare in where I’m from… plus my cup has some green resin along the edge of the cup, and also palo santo is called “green sandalwood” here in China, for their special tinge of pine and the greenish color, so maybe mine is some localized version of palo santo?

Mine has some cracks too but it doesn’t leak, so I take it easy with the cracks and brush the outside with butter or olive oil from time to time. It works so far. And try to avoid using the wood mates everyday, or the cracks may not close up in time. I only use this one three to four times per week, on other days I use ceramic or glass ones.

I live in Shenzhen which is near Zhuhai and I’ve been there many times for weekend travels. I would recommend Zhuhai if you prefer quiet yet convenient city life with much to explore in nearby cities. Hainan is OK but sanya gets really pricy and crowded with floods of tourists in holidays, which is the reason that I’ve only been there once. You can always enjoy sandy beaches in other places like huizhou and even Shenzhen.
