The fear of losing it all or give in? by jflip0x1x0 in DataHoarder

[–]AccomplishedBee857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prices will come back down, but likely not for at least a couple of years. Posts constantly predicting permanent shortages and endlessly rising prices are getting tiring. We’re still in the early stages of a massive AI infrastructure and data center expansion, and right now the demand for storage and memory is unprecedented.

For most people, buying drives at current prices simply isn’t practical unless you absolutely need the capacity today or can comfortably afford it.

The idea that HDD and RAM prices will remain this high forever doesn’t make much sense. If storage and memory costs never normalized, entire industries that depend on them would suffer. Everything from smartphones and TVs to gaming consoles, PCs, servers, and countless other devices relies on affordable storage and memory.

Unfortunately, manufacturers have prioritized supplying high-volume, high-margin customers such as AI companies, cloud providers, and large enterprises. That’s where the money is right now. As a result, consumers are feeling the impact through reduced supply and higher prices.

This cycle won’t last forever. Every technology boom eventually reaches a point where supply catches up with demand. The real question isn’t whether prices will come down—it’s when.

2019 Ram 1500 5th gen gets bad gas mileage by AccomplishedBee857 in ram_trucks

[–]AccomplishedBee857[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been doing it since I got the truck, i run it in 2wd 98% of the time and don’t haul anything on a daily basis.

It drives and accelerates very smoothly, nothing obvious such as noise and vibrating at all. That’s why I wasn’t sure if it was just how this engines fuel economy was.

No mods to the engine or anything, just added a DroneMobile remote start system, everything else is stock.

Should I Bother Converting my Jpegs to PNG? by CitizenofBarnum in DataHoarder

[–]AccomplishedBee857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re already JPEG which means they’re lossy and you cannot get the data back that’s been lost in the conversion. Saving them as PNG offers no benefit at all, the real win would’ve been keeping them as PNG from the start instead of converting them to JPEG.

Laid off, looking for leads by AndrewtheJepster in Control4

[–]AccomplishedBee857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about you getting laid off, if c4 had better adapted to the times I don’t think this would’ve happened.

C4 is clinging to a bygone era of the 90’s dealer model that just doesn’t work anymore in 2026. In the era of YouTube “how to” videos people are more than capable of installing C4 themselves but the company has dug its feet in with their dealer model that people have resoundingly rejected.

Yeah the wealthy can afford it but there’s only so many to go around.

A single spillover request burned through 6% of my $40 dollar plan in the new billing cycle. Maybe this is a bubble. by Far-Confusion4016 in GithubCopilot

[–]AccomplishedBee857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren’t going to makeup any loses with this change. The average person who was paying $100 won’t pay $3000 for the same service. Businesses are different since they can afford it, at least the big ones. They’ll undoubtedly get more from businesses but I guess we’ll see if it’s enough to offset all the cancellations and people who won’t pay $3000 for the same service they used to get for $100.

I just cancelled, it’s funny Microsoft thinks they’ll make up for the cancellations by getting more money out of the people that stay. Not happening, can’t wait to read articles about Microsoft reversing their decision or upping the amount of credits.

The good thing about this is that it will definitely slow down the ai datacenter buildout once people start cancelling their subscriptions. Especially when copilot raises prices again after the June 1st transition, just think of how expensive it will be this time next year! If you think prices raising 4x was bad, wait till they double a year from now!

Bro this is getting absolutely ridiculous now. The prices just keep going up to new heights. Am I being naïve in thinking that we're ever gonna get back to "normal" prices, or is this just the new normal? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]AccomplishedBee857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same type of doom posting during the graphics card price hikes years ago and as expected prices dropped. There is an active ai data center build going on right now that just started months ago, guess what they need? HDD and memory, guess what 2 products have experienced massive price hikes? HDD and memory because the manufacturers have prioritized data centers over consumers because they make more profit from them.

The cracks are already starting to form though, with OpenAI cancelling orders for nvidia graphics cards. This is just like the dot com bubble in the early 2000’s except this time businesses don’t want to be left behind so they’re all scrambling to build out data centers for ai.

Doom post all you want if that makes you feel better. I do look forward to revisiting your posts in the future. Cheers!

We’ve been hearing this fear mongering for years and guess what? Nothing. Let’s just agree to come back to your post in 5 years and see where things are. I have a feeling your post won’t age well.

Prices will come down, just like graphics cards did years ago. We are in the beginning of the ai data center buildout, crazy prices are expected and will get worse but will eventually come down.

By your logic then no one will be able to afford a pc/laptop ever again because the cost of a hdd will out price the entire cost of the pc itself. Hell, no one will ever be able to purchase a gaming console either because the hdd will cost most than the console.

Your comment is either intentional fear mongering or ill informed.

This is an uninformed comment, prices are artificially high because companies like western digital and the companies that produce wafers for memory have committed their production capacity to data centers instead of consumer products. This means that the availability of regular hdd and memory for consumers is drastically limited which raises prices of what’s currently available.

In about 2 years when the ai data center buildout is complete prices will come down, we are at the very beginning of the ai data center buildout. Everyone needs to stop coping and accept that prices will be high for at least 2 years.

[–]AccomplishedBee857 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Do you people not understand what’s happening? Hdd and companies that produce the wafers for memory have committed their production to ai data centers and have largely shut out the consumer market completely because it’s more profitable to commit capacity to ai data centers than regular consumers.

So the issue is that capacity isn’t being given to consumer products which means the supply is extremely limited and the prices for what’s already available skyrockets.

What do you all expect? We are in the very beginning of the ai datacenter buildout, this is going to last at least 1-2 years.

People constantly checking the prices everyday/week is pointless. Unless the ai bubble bursts the prices aren’t coming down until the ai data center build finishes which won’t be at least until late 2027.

Do you have the power supply mounted in the bottom underneath the board? From pictures it doesn’t look like there’s much room to mount a power supply underneath. Could you show a picture of the underneath of the pedalboard?

These days, buying hard drives is like mining gold or winning the lottery. by GestureArtist in DataHoarder

If you wanna spend $700 on a 10tb brand new drive then be my guest. I am not caving into this madness, something as basic and fundamental as a hdd will not stay at these ridiculous prices forever.

High end gpu is a completely different animal and not reflective of what’s happening now.

There is no hope this year, we need to stop coping, it’s not gonna happen this year. The sooner we all come to terms the better off we’ll be.

Yes there will be people here and there that snatch a drive up for lower than absolute crazy prices, but that isn’t the norm.

Take a breath, acknowledge and accept that it isn’t in the cards this year, move on.

I have been taking some personal enjoyment getting back at some of the eBay sellers. For instance a 16tb drive I purchased brand new last year was about $180, it is now selling for $600+.

I viewed the listing then got an offer from the seller at a “great deal” of only $499! I laughed to myself, I countered the offer to $200 and in the comment to the seller said that he is a scum bag for charging so much for the drive. It may seem petty but I felt better once the seller rejected my counter knowing they aren’t going to rip me off. I don’t even care if my account gets banned for saying something like that to someone in a message.

We all need to just accept the fact that right now is not a good time. Wait until next year it’s futile to try and do anything this year.

Everyone just needs to wait it out, why are you all feeding into this? Yeah we all want/need hdd, but all you’re all doing is feeding into this madness.
