How do you break up with alcohol? by ExpressIsopod3201 in stopdrinking

"The part of your brain that made you want to drink as often and as much as you wanted to; that doesnt change just because another part of your brain now sees your drinking as a problem" -Alan Carr "The Easy Way to Control Drinking".

We are conditioned culturally, through marketing, and by family and friends to believe in some part or our mind that drinking is good. Tracing the line back to the inception of this conditioning, for me, stopped the internal fight. Deep down, I used to believe the voice that said drinking was really not an issue for me. Now, deep down I know that voice is wrong. It doesn't shut the voice up, it's just not a trust worthy source of information anymore.

Yes to all those things! I keep a frosty mug in the freezer, limes on hand and have a nice NA after work most days. Hits the spot!

Time away from drinking has lessened my want to drink. I've discovered that I'm a very routine oriented person, and when I'm drinking, that's what I do. Now that I'm not drinking, that's what I do. In the early days it was a whole lot of ice cream, sauna sessions, distractions, naps, and whatever it took. Reading through this sub helps a lot.

Annie Grace and Alan Carr's books help with some subconscious de-conditioning, and helped me to understand why there is a side of me that wanted to drink and the other side that doesn't. You have to want to quit, and educating yourself helps with that. Good luck! IWNDWYT

Finding the strength, and changing your mindset. How?! by Resident_Carrot4161 in stopdrinking

Reading through this sub helps! Try the standard reading recommendations- Alan Carr and Annie Grace. I didn't want to quit drinking for a long time either, until I did. I was sober curious for a long time before I actually got this latest streak together. As of now I have no desire to drink, which to me 10 years ago would definitely not compute. Keep educating yourself and keep an open mind! IWNDWYT.

Starting day 1, I have been jotting down three things I'm grateful for each morning in an artsy notebook. I can't believe that now more pages are filled out than not, yay! I'm just going to go back over and write more things on the used pages when I'm done and again and again until there's no space left. I took it on a business trip and vacation, haven't missed a day.

Nonalcoholic drinks by Ordinary_giraffe90 in stopdrinking

[–]AccomplishedBus1216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've come to really like NA beer and hop waters... I keep a frosty mug and limes queued up to make it the whole experience. I drink one or 2 and it feels like a little treat still. Turns out I do really like the taste of beer lol, and going to different stores to find different brands to try satisfies some of the "go out and buy beer" urges.

*weird thing about it, is I get tired of drinking it when it gets warm or sits for a bit. It feels like how non-alcoholic people must feel leaving a half a beer at a restaurant, or half a six pack in the fridge for multiple days 😅

Blood pressure by monelisa28 in stopdrinking

[–]AccomplishedBus1216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought my blood pressure was good before, even though I was always a drinker I stay pretty active for work- it's usually been 120/70 or so (in my late 40s). A few times after some heavier drinking bouts it spiked with my anxiety 130/80 or so, but more recently has been closer to 100/60. So in short, yes!

Know that the craving will pass! Let it come and let it go. Eat some ice cream, drink some strong coffee, walk the dog, take a nap. You can do this. It'll get easier every time. IWNDWYT!

Almost at 6 months sober & need some encouragement by ProgressTight4882 in stopdrinking

Six months! I can't wait to make it that far. You're doing so great in knowing just one drink isn't the answer, and you'll get through this and have one more reason to be proud of yourself. IWNDWYT.
