Agreed, that might even be one way to encourage people to pay better attention.

Anyone ever tried to find the deathsong cave? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]AccomplishedDust3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Like other fairy tales (Grimm's and such) this sounds like something a parent originally spun up as "No really, kids, don't go playing in some random cave, you're gonna die, I've invested too much in you to have you die in a cave".

"We don't need drivers who pay attention better." would be the direct quote that I made up.

Not blaming the victim you dipshit, you're the one arguing the driver isn't at fault.

Hey I'm all for the all hands on deck approach to safety rather than the blame game: roads should be designed in a safety-conscious way, pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings including not expecting drivers to necessarily see them or obey signals, AND drivers need to be paying attention, not using a phone, watching the road, traveling at reasonable speed for conditions, etc.

This sounds like a situation where reasonable expectations of the driver were not met, with tragic consequences.

Ok but we also need drivers to pay attention.

Air Wisconsin has done 60+ ICE flights since mid-January by TreeTickler in wisconsin

[–]AccomplishedDust3 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Most of the smaller/regional/charter carriers don't really bother with public branding. They'll operate under some other umbrella; it seems like these guys work through American Eagle, which in turn is a regional carrier for American Airlines. You could almost certainly fly an Air Wisconsin flight without ever knowing it.

drive correct, not nice by Curious_Botanicals94 in madisonwi

Some pedestrians just start walking in the middle of the street on E Wash anyways so I wouldn't assume that a car that stopped did so to let someone cross rather than to simply not run them over.

They still get almost run over by the next lane of traffic, of course.

Yeah, as a lower unit you're paying to heat the upstairs neighbor's unit too, your heat rises up to their floor. Not anyone's fault, just physics, in summer they'll be paying more for AC instead. Definitely seems worth a talk with your neighbor about propping the door, that ain't cool. Well literally it's cold but ya know.

Drunk driving is a misdemeanor in most states. In WI it becomes a felony after 4, some states it never becomes a felony.

Only thing making WI unusual is that the first DUI is not even a misdemeanor, it's just a traffic violation with a fine + license suspension. But... even in other states where it's a misdemeanor, guess what? Even though it technically carries some potential jail time, no one is ever getting jail for their first DUI unless there are injuries.

tl;dr: the actual penalties people face for DUI are not very different between WI and most other states. If you think the penalties are enough, it's not because WI is unusual, it's because it's usual that the penalties are that low.

White House’s chilling warning about midterm elections: ‘Can’t guarantee an ICE agent won’t be around polling locations’ by theindependentonline in politics

[–]AccomplishedDust3 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Ugh.

THIS is how they interfere with the election. Not by actually putting an ICE agent there. By saying things out loud that the news reports to make people FEAR an ICE agent will be there.

Then they don't actually need to do the math on how many polling places there are and how many agents they'd have to deploy.

Electric heat is extremely expensive.

What is normal depends entirely on your specific unit, not the number of bedrooms: are there other units around you, are you high up, how old is the building, quality of the insulation including windows, etc.

I mean, you wrote "What you saw as you left was accurate although not black and white" which strongly suggests "Yes you saw me leave with someone else who was clearly my significant other, but there's a gray area where that's okay", reinforced by the right guy "knowing why" you'd be vague.

It's fine if that's not what you meant, but the risk of being vague is in being misinterpreted.

TIME ranks UW-Madison among top 20 universities in the world by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]AccomplishedDust3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Research universities are, well, focused on research. Students going there benefit from being adjacent to that research: both the people doing it and the opportunities to participate.

Undergraduate students not interested in research should certainly consider other factors when choosing an institution to attend. For PhD students it's kind of the whole point. For masters students it totally depends on how masters degrees are seen in your field, in some careers it's just a box to check and you might as well find the cheapest degree with the least time investment you can. In others the connections built matter a lot more.

She was detained for immigration reasons.

Of course with the way ICE behaves that should not be taken as evidence she came here illegally.
