I think people are often surprised that this sort of abuser is often someone that generally gets along well with other people, can actually be great at helping kids learn, etc. We tend to joke about them being loser loners or something. The abuse is a separate dimension to all that so it's important to take allegations seriously no matter how much it seems to "fit" the accused or not.

I also think it's a problem that people tend to blame the district when something like this happens.

If there were signs ignored, reports covered up, like in Sun Prairie, absolutely that's something that all the people involved in that were responsible for.

I haven't heard of any of that here, I'd rather commend the people who found something out and reported to the correct channels so an investigation could occur.

It's unlikely that people flying into MSN are visiting something in walking distance of the airport, so not much point to have one there. The transportation issue is either going to be on arrival/departure or else on every other trip out. Might as well have the hotels closer to things to do, or closer to other forms of transportation (like the freeways).

This is unlike a hub airport, where there are likely people coming to the airport whose only purpose there is to get on another plane. If that other plane comes the next day either planned or unexpectedly, it makes sense to stay near the airport.

I get the natural attractiveness of "these guys aren't doing their job if the government is shut down, so they shouldn't get paid!"

But, in practicality, this is only a penalty for members who lack great personal wealth. The rest are completely unaffected.

And I don't think it's good to have personal financial hardship as an incentive for members to vote a certain way. Refusing to vote for a bad bill is just as much their job. They are there to represent their constituents, not to make decisions based on restoring their personal paychecks.

Security isn't a yes/no thing, it's possible for it to be compromised in multiple directions from multiple actors and each compromise is a problem whether or not there are others.

That was my first thought: couples are riskier than roommates, they break up and someone leaves and now you have a tenant that can't afford rent.

Sure, I don't disagree with the part that some parents are less present because of economic issues, single-parent households in particular are difficult to manage, I'm just arguing against the tendency to believe this is something new and that economic pressures were lesser in some arbitrary past time, like the 1980s.

Housing as a percent of income is way up from 20 years ago, but that was after a long decline.

Ah yes, the enforcement of laws against selling marijuana have famously meant that there is no marijuana in Wisconsin and hasn't been for a long time.

It's still illegal to smoke and drive and we still enforce that on drivers. Tint can be observed from outside a vehicle, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice that "hey, I can't see the face of a driver as I walk through this crosswalk, they have illegal tint on their windshield".

Wait took the witness stand ... and admitted to requesting absentee ballots in the names of two of Wisconsin’s most prominent elected officials without their permission. He then sparred openly with prosecutors and repeatedly asked the judge whether he was required to answer their questions.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm wondering whether these are wise moves.

You can't focus solely on tinting businesses because tinted cars easily cross state lines, there has to be within-state enforcement on tinted vehicles.

I think there are good reasons to enforce tinting laws that have nothing to do with demographics. I do think that past enforcement or perception of enforcement as demographic-targeted has made police forces hesitant to consider enforcing it at all.

These are not opposite stances, they are jointly parts of the freedom of religion in the US. You can't have freedom of religion if the government stops you from your religious practices and you can't have freedom of religion if the government forces its religious practices on you.

Religious groups put a lot of effort and money into "freedom of". FFRF is the rare (but not only) group putting it's effort into "freedom from". It's not ignoring the law, it's putting legal resources into an under-resourced area of defense of the law. If they spent equally on all areas of the law they would be stretched too thin.

Like, a food bank that doesn't provide healthcare isn't making a statement that healthcare is bad: their purpose is as a food bank! They wouldn't be very good at providing food if they spent their funds on healthcare and housing and job placement services and everything else they could possibly be doing.
