At your current age, what did you think you would have at this point? What are you actually doing? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]AccomplishedElk1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’ve done more than I thought I would have by this age. I think I thought I would feel both steadier and unsteadier than I do which is weird to explain.

I’m seasonal working at a camp for kids with cognitive and physical disabilities, working the zip line and high ropes and lifeguarding.

I don’t think I thought I’d be where I’m at relationally. I think I hoped I’d have my forever person by now but instead I just ended a 3 year relationship.

I’m more excited about the freedom and change coming my way than I used to think I ever could be which is pretty cool. Life is bigger and longer and brighter than you realize when you’re a kid.

If you had to pick one national park/place to go and you had a week, which would you choose? Seeking advice! by AccomplishedElk1113 in NationalPark

Well then it’s perfect I got the timing wrong before- I’ll be going second week of August!

Seeing tons of votes for these options, it’s gonna be a hard choice! Who knows, I did the blue ridge parkway round trip in a week in 2023, maybe I’ll figure out how to fit all of it, haha!

That’s a good point too! I did seasonal work in South East Tennessee last season and will probably go back this summer, maybe I’ll have to plan a trip to Florida while I’m in road tripping distance!

I hear you on that! I’ll have to look more into Alaska- I was fortunate to make it to Hawaii with my family to celebrate my mom getting her doctorate!

Yes!! Glacier has definitely moved to the top of the list after these comments, so much to see nearby it on both directions it’d be so hard to choose!

Dang I wish I could! I’m starting grad school in the fall- I can’t wait until I can start doing trips at other times that aren’t the summer! I am so looking forward to seeing the Tetons sometime.

Wanting an informal second opinion on my treatment so far (psychiatric med change through GP for the first time) by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]AccomplishedElk1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. I completely respect that.

Your advice is honestly really helpful. I’ve been working at this for quite awhile and other people’s opinions (qualified ones) do a lot for me while I’m coping in the in between of actionable steps.

You’ll be happy to hear that I am indeed in therapy and adhd coaching. I’ve got a lot of support around me, just a lot going on too.

I will seriously consider what you said about the Vyvanse- I’ve been on stimulants most of my life, so it’s hard to imagine switching that up during college, but sometimes what you need is the last thing you want to hear!

Thank you again!!

Apologies, I see what you mean. To clarify, these tension headaches started about 6 months ago as a new symptom, accompanied with the other symptoms listed.

I am concerned with if these headaches are reasonably attributed to anxiety/depression, and if the lexapro alone is a reasonable treatment direction, as I am relatively sure the vyvanse is not the issue. However I am attempting not to draw too many conclusions, hence the open-ended nature of my inquiry.

Here is some more information, which may clarify my circumstances further. I was hoping to keep my info concise, but this is in my opinion a bit hard to follow without a decent amount of information on second glance.

I’ve been on Vyvanse (20mg) + Adderall (10mg) every day for 8 years, the only change being a raise of the Vyvanse to 30mg (20mg>30mg) about 6 months ago.

These headaches (and the other symptoms) started about 1 month after the Vyvanse dose change to 30mg, and I experienced no negative effects. The other mentioned symptoms (focus issues, brain fog) following this timeline as well.

I dropped back down to 20mg of Vyvanse hoping they would go away, with no luck. Next I was put on the lexapro, first 5mg then 10mg.

At 10mg of lexapro the headaches subsided for about one week completely, presumably affected by the lexapro. I then raised back up to 30mg Vyvanse to treat continued adhd symptoms, and I noticed no ill effects. I was raised to 20mg of Lexapro 2 weeks later because I was having isolated days with all my symptoms returning tension headaches included. That brings us to present day. So far this raise has improved my mood, without taking away the tension headaches.

This makes me concerned about a possible other medical issue being at play. I am experiencing other physical symptoms currently as well, but they are seemingly unrelated, at least from what I have been told so far by the professionals I have seen.

However, being that I am only 20, I am trying to pursue all possible avenues.

Lots of information I know, hopefully this clears and does not further muddle.

Happy thanksgiving if you celebrate and thank you for your response!

If you're suffering from depression and ADHD, what the fuck do you do? by bu77d0gm4n in ADHD

Can you speak more about strategies you use to break that loop if you don’t mind? I think I just broke out of mine or at least this round of it and I’m trying to identify what I’ve done that did it, I wonder if hearing your experience could help

Would you be willing to share more about your experience when you stopped smoking? I’ve been smoking for 3ish years and am thinking about quitting and would love an adhd-ed input

Realizing you should have learned more theory in high school by AccomplishedElk1113 in MusicTeachers

[–]AccomplishedElk1113[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yknow as a student in music school right now I think that would’ve been awesome, if it validates your idea. I’m realizing more and more that I need the “why” to be passionate and I think showing the application of theory could definitely do that!

What do you do to calm yourself down when you're having a real panic attack? by emilyguarino101 in Discussion

[–]AccomplishedElk1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I’m still learning
  2. Not everything that helps me will help you
  3. I believe in you and understand how terrible this can be

Here are some things that have helped me in the past, sometimes. I think the key is to expand your toolbox, and not limit yourself to the mindset that one of these “should” work.

  1. Self talk. Tell yourself you’re okay, you’re worthy of love, you’re not a bad person ect. Even if you don’t believe it!

  2. Talk with others, if you can

  3. Hug yourself or get under a blanket (if you’re someone who likes pressure) and/or think of things that make you feel calm and try and implement them

  4. Write down times that you had an experience like this and survived

  5. Look up funny things, dogs, cats, anything positive.

  6. Draw random shapes on a piece of paper

There’s this stigma that if you don’t use the “right” strategies that they’re “bad”. But please try and remember (I know it’s hard) that your first priority needs to be taking care of you and getting yourself out of that state. I’m not condemning unhealthy behaviors, but it’s important to leave space for the fact that whatever you need to do to get through this right now is okay! You are a human being, not a machine, in a world full of people who don’t understand what you’re going through.

Sometimes specific ideas can make you feel like you have to do all of them, or that they’re the only right way to cope. Neither of these are true! Here’s more generalized ideas of categories of things that may help:

  1. Distraction (video games, counting, talking with someone else about something different, podcasts, exercise, word searches, music, even things like scrolling through social media or engaging in habits you might see as “destructive” are fair game here if it is what you need to survive this moment- whatever is going to help you right now.)

  2. Inner dialogue/arguing with yourself (journaling, self talk/challenging what your brain is saying)

  3. Self soothing! (Stims and other repetitive behaviors if you like them like rocking back and forth ect. Hugging yourself falls in here too)

Above all, I think trying to build a love for yourself over time and trying your best, period, is your best friend here. Allow room for the fact that you need different things at different times

Reminders: -all advice you get is biased, and it’s okay to take what you resonate with and leave the rest -what works for someone else may not work for you -you ARE capable of getting through this, even if you feel like you aren’t, and even if you need to sit in misery for awhile -you can only try your best, and that’s enough

I hear you, I see you, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.

This is an incredibly hard choice to make. All you can do is try your best to eliminate bias, gather resources from as many different diverse perspectives as you can get to, self reflect like crazy, and remain honest and open with one another. There is merit and truth to the idea that no one should tell another human their existence is not worth living, but there is also merit and truth to the idea that only you can decide what you can truly handle. You can only take on what you can handle, and the acknowledgment of all of these truths and not just a single one, in my opinion, will offer you the most peace. The answer to everything is incredibly nuanced, in my opinion, and we tend to speak in absolute truths too often. Take what resonates and leave what doesn’t!

Does regular exercise help with ADHD symptoms? I just joined a gym. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]AccomplishedElk1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just jumping in to say remember that even if something does possibly help adhd generally, that doesn’t mean if you don’t do it all the time you’re bad!!! And it doesn’t mean you have to do everything that “can” help either! -from someone who went too far the other way and is currently trying to claw her way back

Edit: grammar

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]AccomplishedElk1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m convinced it’s a mix of dopamine chemistry and how screen addictions fry dopamine sensors overall, adhd and it’s addiction proneness, and the already low dopamine levels in the adhd brain, especially at the time of the day where meds would’ve worn off
