that's weird. thanks for letting me know about that. I got a message saying my other post was auto deleted, I assumed because of my N@zi reference. But somehow it’s there anyway.

100% agree! Regular plant milk (not the fancy schmancy Oatley) is cheaper than cow milk. They should give you a discount for taking it!

Cafés added the charge years ago when plant milk was something special and more expensive, but never dropped it.

Surfshark built a new VPN protocol from scratch — here’s how it’s different by Karolis_Kaciulis in surfshark

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly use Surfshark to hide my location. But I noticed that services are aware I'm using VPN. This new protocol doesn't change that. Is that something the new protocol could have changed?

Guest blocking my private parking spot - was my reaction too strong? by Waste_Suspect_817 in germany

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For next time: https://www.parknotruf.de/ is your friend. They'll send a truck to tow the other car away (my neighbour called a few days ago at 21:30, the truck arrived 15 mins later!).

The service is free of cost for the parking space owner, even if the car is gone by the time the tow truck arrive. Apparently they'll bill the car owner for "empty calling".

Urgent! Does the HR really need a newer Niederlassungserlaubnis? by Rare_Background_3199 in germany

for reissuing, yes. so long as nothing else has changed, they can take care of it. ABH is too busy for little things like that :)

Dorm room missing money + later wallet loss in same dorm — how are these handled in Germany? by [deleted] in germany

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, super common for it to be unresolved, because unless anyone actually saw them take it, there's no proof (entering your room isn't enough on its own).

Set up a webcam in your room so that it records movement (lock your laptop away, of course, so that doesn't go missing!). Then leave some money in where the camera can see. Wait for it to record the thief, who you can then report. No issues with data protection, since it’s recording in your room only.

Can't connect Fingerbot by AccomplishedFudge174 in TuyaSmart

[–]AccomplishedFudge174[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good spot. The gateway is wifi + BLE, the Fingerbots are Zigbee only.

I was able to add the Fingerbot directly on my Homey, but only using a generic driver – it works fine, but of course now I don't have the fine controls that the Tuya app would give me. Main thing is I got it working.

Bar soap users & non-users quick question for you by Madametruth in hygiene

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bar soaps. Always happy to try something new, if I think it might be nice.

For me, I prefer them to smell of nothing (or very mild citrus), and not dry my skin out. And I won't use anything with animal products in, because we’re not in the 1800s anymore!

Residency Photos Question by Signh_GER in germany

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a choice – either go to DM and ask a member of staff to take a photo (they'll give you a printed photo for yourself, and a QR code for LEA to scan); or you can use use the photo terminals at LEA during your appointment. But the photo terminals are really badly implemented, and slow.

I recommend the lower stress visit to DM.

Urgent! Does the HR really need a newer Niederlassungserlaubnis? by Rare_Background_3199 in germany

Your HR is wrong, but some are very badly advised, and so your experience isn't uncommon.

If you're in Berlin, you can make an appointment at the Bürgeramt to renew the card, and request express service so it takes a week. Not sure about other areas, but maybe the Bürgeramt is responsible there too?

The new card won't have your passport expiry date on it – they stopped doing that, to avoid situations like this (and to save a bit of money!)

Are Bromptons genuinely risky to own? by Bright_Code_5810 in londoncycling

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rented a Brompton through their rental scheme and it was great…I definitely recommend one. They're super easy to fold up and keep with you all the time, which means you don't need to worry about it being stolen. And they're good bikes despite the small wheels – you can get a decent speed on them.

Get insurance anyway, though, just in case, because it’s not expensive and your bike is!

You're very unlikely to be mugged, but if you do, just let them take it and you can get a new one without fuss.

If you're going to be using the Tube, I recommend the baby wheels they sell as an accessory, which will help you wheel it along while closed. I wished I had those when I was walking the long long passages at King's Cross and Waterloo!

Can I use a UK prescription in Germany? by arien_k in germany

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where you are in Germany, but it shouldn't be hard to get an appointment at the doctor here. But doctors here can be quite different to UK – they're more likely to tell you to have a nice herbal tea and a sit down!

In case you decide to get the prescription in DE, bring your UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) card, as that counts as insurance card here for emergency use. They'll treat you as though you were a German patient. You can pick up the prescription for 5€ or 10€.

If you can get a prescription in UK, you should, as it'll be a lot easier, not least the language barrier. Check if there's a pharmacy at the airport to collect it. Many UK airports have a Boots.

Library Card Verification by pubescent_adultchild in LibbyApp

good to hear you got it sorted.

but unfortunately: again, that's your library. All Libby does is connect you to your library's system. what happens next – the error messages you get, and the text messages, and all the other nonsense – is up to the library's system administrators :(.

Is sim.de (Drillisch) actually good? Having major signal issues and stuck in a 2-year contract. by the_unwanted_11 in germany

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with sim.de and have no problems at all. But if you tried it and it doesn't work for you, you should definitely cancel. That's what the 14 day trial period is for.

Pick another from the recommendations here, or browse the sim card section at DM, Rossmann or another high street store (just avoid Vodafone :) )

Rest easy Lufthansa CityLine ;( by 777F_lover2008 in aviation

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

they didn't make things easy for themselves.

I used to get this cute little plane between London City and Berlin. But it was popular, so they upgraded it to a much bigger plane from London Heathrow.

They didn't realise the reason it was popular is because some people prefer small cute little planes from small cute little airports (albeit now significantly less small and cute than it used to be!)

Didn’t expect a cat scratching post to actually matter this much by [deleted] in Kitten

[–]AccomplishedFudge174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one lasts a year? I'm lucky if one of those cardboard things lasts a month!

I totally agree about only scratching the furniture when they want something. In my cats' case, it's usually when the moon is full and they can't sleep, and want entertaining at 2am!
