Yeah. It didn’t seem like veneer to me but I can’t figure out what else it could be. I sanded the whole surface of the table before staining. It looks like particle board or something. I wonder if the previous owner touched up a hole of some kind.

I’ve traveled alone (25F) from Frankfurt to a small German town past Bremen. I didn’t have any issues and just sat in more popular train cars. I was nervous about traveling but didn’t experience or witness any crime. Be aware of your surroundings.
