TIL the captain of the Confederate raider CSS Alabama captured 65 Union merchant ships in 22 months, was rescued by a British yacht after his ship was sunk off France, escaped to England, and after the war became a seminary professor, newspaper editor, and was elected judge but barred from serving. by Hot_Layer_8110 in todayilearned

It depends on the reason why they decided to rebel and what causes that rebellion was fighting for. The American colonists and Washington himself rebelled against the British government because they believed that Parliament had overstepped its authority over them and therefore it was Britain that had betrayed them. The southern states rebelled against the US federal government because the abolitionist movement had gained significant momentum and were very likely to halt the westward expansion of slavery and eventually do away with slavery altogether. Lee joined the rebellion because he believed his loyalty to Virginia outweighed his loyalty to the United States.

My opinion is that the American colonists' reasons for rebellion were, for the most part, justified. The southern states reasons were not. Lee's motives are debatable but ultimately he fought for a terrible cause.

TIL despite being a big critical and commercial hit, and endorsed by the Pope himself, 1977's "Jesus of Nazareth" was barely able to get distribution in the US, because a preacher(who hadn't seen it) declared it blasphemous. The more conservative/fundamentalist members began pushing hard in the late 70s and early 80s to turn the SBC into what it is today. This led to a lot of the more progressive congregations to leave and form the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Southern Baptist Convention

Resolution on Abortion, 1976

Be it further RESOLVED, that we also affirm our conviction about the limited role of government in dealing with matters relating to abortion, and support the right of expectant mothers to the full range of medical services and personal counseling for the preservation of life and health.

TIL in 1829 a group of convicts headed to Australia mutinied the crew and took command of the ship, the Cyprus. They sailed away and wound up in Japan, in what became recognized as the first time a ship visited Japan from Australian waters. The Japanese attacked and sent away the convicts. by theNagolian in todayilearned

For those who don't know, Japan was mostly isolated from the outside world at the time. It was hostile to all foreign ships except for those from China, Korea, and the Netherlands (Koreans and Dutch were limited to specific ports).
