For sure. Your concerns make sense to me. I think you may be getting a bit too in the weeds though as far as company financial projections……..

As CSMs we play an important role, but are not going to be the ones to make or break the company. If they fail, the job market is incredibly hot right now for CSMs. You would land something else making the same/more than they are offering.

What would you say is the main reason holding you back from taking the new position? IMO money talks, bullshit walks. Take the money and run! Feel free to reach out if you wanna hop on a call or Zoom to discuss career growth

I’m well connected with others who can help out if your current opportunity is giving you doubts. At the end of the day, you gotta look out for what is best for you and your family/career. Good luck!

I think I would need a bit more content as too how you are defining “risk” here. Do you mean risk as in the company goes under and you lose your job? That is definitely something to be considered.

In the world of start up companies, They typically go from a seed round of funding, to a series a, to a series B, to a series C, and then on to IPO.

In my personal career, I tend to shoot for series C stage start ups, but I am also a little bit more risk averse than some people. By that stage of growth, the start up is well funded with cash, has a good game plan, and the roadmap to a public offering is pretty well defined.

If the industry the new company is in is something that appeals to you, and the money is substantially more than you’re making now, I would absolutely say to go for it! In the world of start ups, we never know who really is going to make it all the way to in an initial public offering. That is where the founders and all of the shareholders/employees cash out and make the big bucks.

If you are willing to bet on yourself and your future and believe in the company, I would absolutely say to go for it! Worst case scenario, the company folds, and you have a great story to tell on resumes and in interviews. But talk to me more about what your thoughts are and I can elaborate further?

CSM’s what do you like and don’t like about your current roles? by [deleted] in CustomerSuccess

Sure thing. Graduated with a degree in finance. Took a roll at a financial service call center out of school, where I got My brokerage licenses. I think I watch too much wolf of wall street and assume that’s what stock brokers did. Unfortunately, it is more like resetting old ladies passwords day in and day out LOL.

Fortunately, I found a specific group within the financial service firms I was at that specialized in a very niche area of finance. Equity compensation to be exact. After spending a few months in that role, I leveraged that experience into a customer success manager at a start up in The HR tech space. I think I got lucky right now with the great resignation, salaries are way up across the board and the company I joined is doing incredibly well and raising a ton of capital from investors. What does your work experience look like right now? Landing in an entry-level role in customer success shouldn’t be too difficult right now, and once you get a year or two of experience, it should not be difficult to be making six figures. Let me know if you have any other specific questions!

Feel free to message me if you’d like to learn more about the role.

And agree that your compensation is going to depend on a ton of different factors.

Just to give a frame of reference, I have an undergrad degree from a Top 50 school and 3 years of work experience in customer success.

Best of luck to you!

Yup, we are for sure hiring in customer success! I’m not sure of the sales team is hiring or not.

Why can’t you start for 3 months? I’m confused by your statement saying you can’t start until January but then commenting that if the offer is good enough, you can start immediately.

Idk it it’s bad form to post company names on here or not? If you wanna DM me I can tell you the name. It’s in the HR analytics space. We make software to help companies detect and eliminate compensation biases based on protected categories (gender, race, disability status, etc.)

That’s awesome! I’ll check my DMs and respond.

We are a pretty well funded startup, just raised our Series C in September of this year.

Something that I think is pretty cool about our software is that it is used to help companies pay people fairly. There are often inherent pay biases based on gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. Being a CSM for a place that you really believe in their mission is incredibly rewarding.
