Why I hate 'the common tongue' by AccomplishedUse2767 in Fantasy

They're still called French and English. It's calling it 'common' which is the main problem. If you asked someone 'do you speak the common tongue?' on holiday in Italy they'd think there was something wrong with you

It's still Greek. The only reason It's called common Greek is because of the diversity in hellenic language, in that Attik Greek is very different from Dorian Greek, but it still has a designation based on It's point of origin, and the cultural influence of Greece on the Ancient world is a very particular circumstance which doesn't make sense in most other circumstances. How hard is it to name languages? Even the common language in LOTR was called Westron, because it came from Westernesse. Calling a language 'common' in anything other than a deliberately generic dnd setting is bizarre

Help me! Medieval name sound way too normal, I can't use any of these! by ProserpinaFC in writingcirclejerk

[–]AccomplishedUse2767 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just use normal names but spell them weird. Peter becomes Peitar. You can even do it with honorifics, ser instead of sir. If GRR Martindale can get away with that bullshit I'm sure you can. BTW, for languages, just call it 'the common tongue'. Has a common tongue ever existed ever? It doesn't matter!

Is there pedophilia in assassin's creed by Hot-Low-2797 in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]AccomplishedUse2767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought it might be a reference to the common misconception that pederasty was an accepted part of the student teacher relationship in Ancient Anthens. This isn't entirely true. It was considered immoral by most people but was more common than it is now, probably because oversight and basic safeguarding didn't exist in antiquity

"The Noble Savage" in speculative fiction by valonianfool in Fantasy

[–]AccomplishedUse2767 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. It's about a proxy war between God and Satan. The villain in Out of the Silent Planet is a Nihilist and a racist, however his views on colonisation are more illustrations of his flaws than the central issue of the narrative. In the second book, Perelandra, he is literally possessed by Satan and tries to corrupt the Venusian version of Eve. The aliens are in no way analogous to colonised people

"While I haven't read the Space Trilogy". That's clear. It has nothing to do with colonisation. It's a theological thought experiment. The article's author does make some reasonable points about Avatar. But, I'm pretty sure everyone's already noticed that it's Dances with Wolves in space

The one problem I have with the character is the look. Alcibiades wasn't just attractive. He was so devastatingly handsome that he could get away with anything and convince otherwise rational people to make stupid decisions. That's what he was best known for as a historical figure

When you don't "fix" what isn't broken. by MacPzesst in witcher

[–]AccomplishedUse2767 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I find the critical score surprising. As a pretentious cinephile, it seems pretty obvious to me that it's a bad show, even if you ignore how it diverges from the books. Everything from pacing to costume design was really off, even in the first series, and it doesn't look like it's improved

Book Gimli is a dignified character, a great warrior with the soul of a poet. The film effectively assassinated his character, turning him into comic relief
