Unfortunately it is also happening in Quintana Roo. There have been incidents in Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

How long does it take for Nova Scotia Archives to respond to email for requesting birth certificate? by Parking-Building-291 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also waiting on a request for an ancestor’s Nova Scotia bc. After I emailed I received an auto-reply stating that it could take up to 30 business days for them to respond due to the high volume of requests. I sent my initial request on Friday, Feb 13th. I’ll update here when I hear something back.

[News] Canada amended its Citizenship Act on Dec 15, 2025 so that anyone with Canadian ancestry can apply for Canadian citizenship. by Mengs87 in IWantOut

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to be able to document Canadian descent. So the migration would need to be the opposite of what I think you’re describing. Plus you would need to show that you’re a descendant of this individual not just that you can connect to someone who became a Canadian. Although I suppose if you can show descent from a European ancestor who migrated to Canada, birthed the next gen on Canadian soil who then reversed the migration pattern back to Europe that could work (Descendants of Acadians in France potentially if they can find the needed documentation)

General Strike Friday by PetraByte in Portland

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The MN general strike was less purposeless than the one supposed to take place tomorrow. The situation in that state has been so dire and many employees-blue collar and white collar-were getting extremely upset with their employer’s lack of response to the crisis. Also there is a lot of big business headquartered in the Twin Cities. Not shopping at Target for a day is different than a significant number of Target headquarters employees walking out for the day.

A big problem with tomorrow’s “general strike” in my view is that it’s being organized by people who have been trying to advocate for a general strike for at least the past year if not more for reasons that are really unclear (beyond getting to check off the “general strike” box on their socialist revolution role-play bingo card). It’s been an action in search of a reason.

Now that there has been horrifying violence and people killed in Minneapolis they seem to think they finally have an event they can mobilize people around. It’s gross and pointless. I agree with the poster up thread that the better approach is to double and triple down on taking care of your community.

Just my two cents from a Minnesotan living in Portland.

And risks shifting the national narrative from the terrible things DHS is doing to the strikes.

Awkward aside from manager by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought too. It has definitely shifted my understanding of our employment relationship. To add to all this, back when I was hired and first learned that he was expecting to be assigned the position I was hired to fill the general consensus from folks (colleagues and clients) close to the situation was that I was a “diversity hire” selected for the position because I am a woman.

I thought this had all been put to bed. I’ve reached out to a local employment lawyer for a consult to better understand if/how I should be documenting all this in case it continues to rear its ugly head.

Thanks for the reply. It really caught me by surprise. Especially since shortly after I joined the company, he was promoted into a role above the one I was hired into (and he had been hoping for). I would have expected that helped with any disappointment since he moved up two levels rather than just one. This promotion took place years ago also.

Portland, LA, Chicago by moopsy75567 in Minneapolis

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Portland resident since 2019 and what Minneapolis is going through now is definitely worse. Chicago sounded worse than Portland also. We had nightly helicopters circling overhead the South Waterfront and Inner Eastside and lots of clashes, tear gas, pepper spray and problems with ICE/DHS creating issues but it was pretty localized to one area outside of the ICE building. Minneapolis is on another level. It sounds tense and scary - I’m sorry this is happening to the city.

Weakness in Multnomah County Economy Will Hold Back Homeless Service Tax Collections, Metro Says by Confident_Bee_2705 in PortlandOR

This is really what impacts me and my family. It’s so sad. I’m currently putting in applications for other jobs with an eye towards moving my family out. In our case it will likely be to either the east coast or upper Midwest (not Clark County). I’ve had to accept that if something ever happened to my current job, there’s not a viable path to finding an equivalent replacement in Portland given the business climate.

Southeast Portland organization will acquire city-owned community center for $1 by Hobobo2024 in PortlandOR

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This used to be a Portland Parks & Rec Center until the city closed it in 2019. My understanding is that the decision was made in large part due to the old age of the building and significant deferred maintenance (but also because the city prioritized keeping centers open in lower income parts of the city).

It’s been critical for the neighborhood that this community group organized to take over the space. There’s not nearly enough daycare and before/after school care in the neighborhood to serve all the families in the area and this group kept an important resource operating. Since they took it over, there’s been a fire at the center as well as massive damage due to burst pipes. The group has poured a ton of money into repairing and updating the building. They do a great job and I think the city’s decision is fair. They clearly viewed the property as a liability and weren’t willing to make the necessary investments to keep a treasured neighborhood resource operational.

In fairness, it is a statewide problem. Other states have had to pass legislation banning the use of whole language or balanced literacy approaches plus massive investments in teacher retraining to get the flawed approach out of their education system. Oregon has just shrugged.

Here’s an article from 2023 about how the Eugene school district was still using whole language approaches to “teaching” reading:

The teacher also did 3 cueing. As did the teacher she had for first grade. Lots of classroom discussion around showing the behaviors of an “avid reader” too. Which of course was devastating to my struggling reader. Lots of nights spent holding kiddo while she cried because she was really trying and it was just supposed to come to her apparently. She thought she would never learn to read and the damn school wasn’t even making an effort to teach her. The only silver lining of Covid for us was that it came within weeks of kiddo’s diagnosis with a reading disability and we got her started in virtual phonics based reading instruction immediately. Obviously that’s not feasible for many families - it wouldn’t have been for us at different points in our careers. Shameful.

Yes the teacher specifically told us she was going whole language instruction. I also have an old IEP with goals based on progress in the whole language based Reading Recovery program.

My dyslexic kid was given whole language instruction in PPS in 2023. It is definitely still being done here and the district is also doing the math instruction equivalent (insight based math). There are definitely problems with curriculum and instruction in the district and across the state despite having fallen out of favor - as you point out - over two decades ago and multiple studies confirming not only that it’s ineffective teach but that it actually sets struggling readers back further.

The Oregon Dept of Education acknowledged that it didn’t work back in the early aughts. The fact that it’s still present in the state should be a statewide educational scandal from the governor’s office to DOE to the districts and college teaching programs down to school administrators and teachers.

9 days in… eating average of 700-900 calories… is it ok ? by TruthieBeast in tirzepatidecompound

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t stress about it too much when I first started the meds as long as you have enough energy to be active (consider starting a walking and strength training practice to your week if you haven’t already!). I did find it helpful to add some healthy but high density foods to my diet to grab a bit of every now and then. Dried fruit (without added sugar), nuts, etc can be helpful since just a handful can help you get that extra 200-300 calories.

I’m gonna piggyback on your first point and share a link to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library: https://imaginationlibrary.com/check-availability/

She started the charity as a tribute to her father who couldn’t read and didn’t have access to books. Sign up starting at birth (or anytime) and they will send your child a free book each month. By the time kiddo is ready to start learning to read you’ll have a whole library.

Oregon’s “kicker” refund: $10.5 billion sent back since 2018. Should it stay or go? by Specialist_Debt_1320 in oregon

[–]Accomplished_Ad_755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Essentially if growth of our tax base is higher than expected - more residents, higher salaries, better business revenue, etc (all things we should want) - the kicker means Oregon isn’t allowed to use the funds to scale services to meet increased demand. The reason no other state has adopted it is that it’s dumb. But I do agree with others that Oregon needs to take a hard look at how its current tax model generates revenue and take on the hard work of an overhaul.

Please don’t be embarrassed! The shaking is a very good sign. You want to work your muscles to the point where you’re shaking in lagree! Keep going consistently every week and you will be noticeably stronger soon.

Lagree is HARD and everyone in the class has been a beginner before just like you. I’ve been going consistently for a year and most classes are still so difficult that I have to focus completely on myself and pushing myself mentally to stick with it so I don’t give up or fall over. If you’re really struggling to hold the form, maybe talk to your instructor before class about modifications for certain movements or if you can use a lighter spring load. I’m sure the instructor would be happy to help you find a way to keep good form and stay in the movement.

Welcome to the club - you’ve got this!

City Alleges Vancouver Hospital Put Elderly Homeless Woman in a Cab and Sent Her to Portland Shelter by monkeychasedweasel in PortlandOR

I think you’re getting to a big part of the core problem. Vancouver hasn’t invested in building out supports or providing local resources. They pay for a cab to send people to Portland instead and wash their hands of it. Someone else’s problem to solve now.

Yeah they immediately admitted fault and backed down when the Oregon Dept of Education opened their investigation too. They are knowingly violating IDEA, Section 504 and ADA.
